Right now I'm renting out a 4 family block. 1 is empty, but here are the rest:

>70 year old Hungarian couple. Grandpa does the yard work without asking. Grandma grows flowers along the walkway. They already pay less rent but I waived it this month.

>30 yr old wagie, pretty sure he is a fellow anon. Never once missed rent, made any trouble, replaced his own fridge. 50% discount this month.

>Seemingly nice late 30s couple. Had a baby first year they moved in... cries every night. Place smelling like diapers now. Clogged toiled several times. Managed to clog tub drain. Cracked a window and didn't tell me for months. Led to mold growth inside the frame during winter. Hoping I can get rid of them soon.

I would not be surprised if as a consequence of all this, people in the US just stop doing long term rentals. Renter's rights don't apply if you have only been staying somewhere a few weeks with no long term lease.
Imagine a future where it's practically impossible to rent for more than a month at a time without paying the entire lease up front plus a 25% extra security deposit, so most people just rent month to month on Airbnb.
Most people will live with minimal possessions so that when 'move day' comes each month they can pack up and head to their next rental quickly. There will probably be a whole cottage industry of identical pre-furnished apartments where once a month you just move all your shit one unit over.
Man I love the new dystopian future shit is so tight.

Why do people see this as a "get out of rent free" card? You can't just refuse to pay rent and at the same time take governent money being issued out for the sole purpose of paying rent.

My rent is going to be 2 days late this month, which shouldn't be a problem. I'm going to apply for whatever rent relief bullshit presents itself, but you still gotta pay lol. How do people think this is just a free pass?

I've worked lots of seasonal jobs, and getting laid off due to a shortage of work is nothing new to me. You apply for EI, maybe pay rent a little late (most landlords are understanding that those things take time), and make due with a lesser income during the busy parts of the year. The rent doesn't just stop because you got laid off lol. Seriously, millions of people go through this EVERY FUCKING YEAR and no one gives a shit (nor should they)

Fuck fighting evictions or getting in a dispute with my landlord 6 months before my lease is up, its easier to just pay the $820 and have piece of mind.

People who are living in places where 75% of their monthly earnings (ie, more than they'd get on income assistance) are going to rent are fucking morons and I don't feel bad for them. I can pay my rent with 1 week's pay, I can't think of a situation where I would ever let my shelter costs rise above that. I don't even like not being able to pay my cellphone, internet, electricity, food etc bills with that one week's pay (I've worked it out and my monthly bills including food are covered with about 9 working days, which is still higher than I'd like).
