First you have to understand what shorting is. A put is something completely different, its an option. Shorting is when you borrow shares and sell them, then pay back the shares later when the price is hopefully lower. When you short you have to have some money as margin in case the shares go up, you can still buy them back but you lose money. When you short 3x it just means you are shorting 3x the amount of shares then you have money. SQQQ is essentially just shorting 3x and resetting your position every day.

Compared to just a 3x short it will make more after consecutive daily drops, and lose loss after consecutive daily gains, but it will lose more after days of ups and downs.
