In very simplified terms, options are alternatives to actually purchasing stock (although you can also own a stock and purchase an option as insurance).

The name “option” is a clue into what it is; buying an option gives you the option to buy a stock at a particular price (a call) or to sell a stock at a particular price (a put). Again, you don’t actually need to own the stock to do this, it just gives you the option to do so.

For every option purchased, there is a premium; this is the maximum amount you will be able to lose. With that premium paid, you purchase an option that guesses where the stock price will be at a particular expiration date.

You’ll then close the option before the expiration date (unless you’re trying to exercise the option, but that doesn’t really happen too often for this kind of trading) based on when you think is a good time to sell.

TL;DR it’s a bet on whether or not a stock will go up (call) or go down (put)

>take all of the emotion out of it
Everyone should take this advice to heart. It's really the number one rule for trading and investing. If you're emotionally attached to an equity or are spiritually bullish or bearish, you will set yourself up for failure. You can take a view that trends bullish or bearish, but ultimately you need to make educated guesses about market activity and conditions and distance yourself from intense feelings about your estimations. You will be right and you will be wrong. Learn from your mistakes and try to approach things rationally. That said, shitposting is fun, but don't let it cloud your judgement. If you must follow a /biz/ idol, let it be the almighty crab, for he is forgiving and merciful in the face of periodic volatility.

>Do they have insane leverages?
You remember the ""flash crash"". Maybe not? That swas the small dip on February 20th. The SP just dropped 2% out of nowhere. Here that was a moderate annoyance. Over there like 30% probably just lost half their money because they held weekly calls. A small dip like that will wipe away all your positions.

>Cant you go into debt with a shitty put/call?

Options are actually the riskiest type of investment to make, simply because of how premiums and expiration dates work. You either need to pay a lot up front for very little profit on something that may or may not happen, or if you’re chasing that big payday, pay less up front for a bet that may or may not happen. Since options are short term, if the market doesn’t move the way you needed it to, there’s no waiting it out. You’re just fucked.

Expiration dates are in regards to options, yes

Put SPY 200 4/3 or SPY 4/3 200p

Option: You go for a put. The right to SELL a stock at a certain price to someone.
Stock: SPY
Strike price: 200$. You gain the right to sell 1 SPY at a price of 200$.
Date: The date when the option expires.

What does that mean for you:
Lets say you bought this option for 3$.
So if the SPY goes to 196$ on the 3rd of April, you could sell it for 200$. A profit of 4$ Minus the 3$ investment.
If it goes to 194$ you would make a profit of 6$. Minus the 3$ investment. A profit of a 100%.

Now there are the Greeks. Lets say the Spy goes down to 201$ an hour after you bought the option.
Can you exercise it? No.
But: The price has already risen a lot because the option has a time value. The option is worth more, if the experation dtae is further away. You can already sell the option for a great profit.

Nobody exercises options btw. We buy them and sell them. Exercising them makes no sense because even on their last day they have a time value.

>> No.18115910

>>18115744
>>18115825
Specifically on calls and puts, the actual price of the stock has to be at a level under or over the strike price based on how much the premium was.
For example, if you buy X option at $10 strike and the stock price is $10.01 at option expiration, then it will usually expire worthless because it's not worth it for the option holder to exercise that option. Sometimes they might out of spite or if they think the stock will go up soon, though.
It's called the breakeven price and it all varies based on how much the stock is currently worth (the closer the strike of the option to the actual price of the stock the more the premium), the length of time the option is good for (longer timeframes are worth more) and how much volatility there is in a stock (something that rarely goes up or down won't have as valuable options).

You have the option, not the obligation to buy/sell the stock. It’s very silly but that’s the difference between actually owning the stock and owning an option. That and the option itself is a speculative bet on the stock price, and the stock is just the stock.

Eh. Youll get a hang of it.
The most important thing I learned is not to gamble on shit stuff. Stuff like biomemes and so on. Only invest in something you understand and only with money you can afford to lose. If you lose sleep over stocks you invested too much. Even if it works out.

Also most here have no idea whats going on right now and if you are in the game for two days you might as well just watch for now and see the funny colours go up and down. Way smarter people than us are frustrated with this market.

Let me get this straight.

You can write a call -> someone (whoever owns the contract and exercises it) will then buy x amount of stock from you at price
You can sell a call (that you had bought from someone else at some point) -> profit (or lose) from premium and you're off the hook
Same thing with puts.
