I can never understand how people can so fully believe something that other people wrote. So there was this Jesus guy who resurrected and told people to "do unto others as you would have them do unto you", which is a fair one at first glance, but prevents any competition since you can be the one doing whatever the fuck you want while others are following this rule and thus staying behind. Religion is just a way to control the big masses to make them behave themselves which is good of course.

The bible isn't the whole of in-practice Christianity. Consider that laypeople couldn't even read the bible until like 500 years ago. The idea of Christ acting as a lighting rod for sin and protecting you on the deepest level and such if you simply surrender yourself wholly to him allows people to forgive themselves for their sins and mistakes and helps them cope with suffering. It's a powerful memetic tool.
