what does the stock market dropping like this actually mean, in practical terms, to an average joe? i literally LITERALLY only care that society can still keep the grocery store stocked and the lights on, how reasonable will that be? im happy for a price reset and (potentially, but probably not because of corruption) shitty companies failing and getting bought for pennies on the dollar by new management, lower house prices, etc. lots of good things for millenials. also i don't want my parents to get WuFlu, but we all got a really bad case of the Flu over a month ago so maybe that was WuFlu and we're fine? no way to know, we just all assumed it was a really REALLY bad case of the Flu. would be cool if immune to it now.

We're going to see a lot of businesses go bankrupt and we might even see some big ones topple.
In the worst case scenario banks are going to get fucked.
Stock market dropping also means that pension funds aren't getting the kinds of returns they need to stay profitable, which means that everyone's pensions are going to get cut to shreds if the market doesn't start pulling another hell of a bull market very quickly from the bottom.

In short, a lot of people are going to get completely raped economically and lose their credit and assets. These guys are going to be fucked for decades.
Those people are going to be out of the game during the next bull run because they can't throw anything at it.
Society isn't going to collapse, but this is going to be one hell of a wealth transfer and as a result the middle class yet again grows smaller and new billionaires are going to be born.
But also many small guys are going to make it big when they get in at the bottom. Mainly the people who don't have debt.

Both received five-days of conventional treatments, including bed rest, oxygen inhalation and antiviral drugs, but one group was also administered 400 milligrams of hydroxychloroquine—a derivative of chloroquine used in the treatment of malaria and arthritis.
>According to the study, there was no statistical difference between the two treatment plans after seven days. In fact, the recovery of patients in the hydroxychloroquine group fared marginally worse than the controls. Fourteen of the non-hydroxychloroquine group tested negative for COVID-19 at the end of the experiment, versus 13 of the people treated with hydroxychloroquine.

The stock market has been decoupled from the economy for decades. It is vaguely about optimism for the future and if they involve big players into ponzi schemes, like banks, then there is fall out for the average joe.
It's actually the reverse. You should be worried about both a shock to demand and supply chains everywhere in the world right now. And a disease that is being underestimated, sometimes on purpose, for the sake of the stock market. The stock market is going to be "shocked" by reality soon.

That's wrong, unless you're talking about these short term daily moves. When you look at the bigger picture it was never a surprise what was coming.
It's pretty damn evident we have moved to the end stages of this economy.
Corona isn't even important at this point. We would have gone to QE infinity and zero rates soon anyways.
Debt saturation of the people and businesses is a thing that we were quickly reaching. Loan delinquencies getting record high along with debt in every sector, repo market going apeshit etc.. everything was fucked.
The market without Corona had max few years left before this house of cards tumbled.
We were already heading into a depression, this disease is just kicking us there a bit faster. CEO's knew the economy was going to tank and were jumping ship by the dozens at the start of this year.

This right here.

I just wish /SMG/ would automatically boot all the 'AAAAAA' and bull/bear faggot posts that offer nothing of insight or value, and just add more BS to filter through.

First, there's still all the COVID cases to sort through in the ConUS, which from past experience in other countries are still two to three weeks away from peaking. Just look at Italy. The good news is that the Italians seem to be past the peak of the first hill of the virus-coaster.

https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6

Just check the link and check in daily, US growth in terms of cases is still exponential. Just click on country by country in the left column. One we pass the peak in the US, we can start to relax a little.

What all that doesn't account for are all the secondary and tertiary effects this will have on a great majority of the population who have less than a few hundred dollars in their savings accounts. Interest rates will go up on housing due to risk (as they are in Leafland) and more and more people who are living paycheck to paycheck are going to be absolutely BTFO'd if they are behind on bills or their jobs don't re-materialize when this winds down.

Then what happens when people start defaulting on auto/student/home/LoC loans in a growing cascade.

Who knows... no one knows, but the next few months will be bumpy. Hope you all are staying frosty and keeping your powder dry.

the sad thing is that it isn't even that hard to develop a reasonably profitable enough system using free information you can find on the internet and lots of testing so you actually understand the concepts you're working with and whether your ideas are good or shit.

it's not even that hard but people are impatient and greedy and want to get rich quick. it's the weirdest fucking thing because on the one hand, people should be terrified of the ability to lose money in the market, but at the same time it's not that hard to make a decent living with even a basic understanding of this stuff and a personality that can follow the rules without emotion. that's all you need for literal free money and yet 99% of people constantly fuck this up, lose money, then quit.

it's like they skipped medical school, kicked open the door to a surgery room and said "DON'T TELL ME SHIT JUST GIVE ME THE SCALPEL BITCH" and then killed like 3 patients and said "ALRIGHT FUCK IT I GUESS THIS AINT FOR ME, IM OUT".

10Ks are more telling than news stories. You can legitimately tell what a company is doing with it's money, lots of it's risk factors, and many other important aspects to the company. It's essential to bear in mind that stocks are shares of a company. Yes the market does have a say in market price, and market prices CAN and HAVE been manipulated in the past, but a 10K along with outlook on leadership, and an understanding and utilization of proper analysis is more rewarding than just some news articles. Passive investing does not exist, and lazy investing is just betting. You'd be likely better off betting on sports games at that point, considered your chances for loss vs reward can be far better in your favor if you know what you're doing.

So a good website I use for analysis is macrotrends. They generally have a link to the company filings (10Ks) and present a lot of the financial information. A simple google search can present you with the filings as well. 10Ks, 10Qs, etc, they can all bear some importance. Generally they're on the SEC website but that's not always necessary if you're looking at financials alone.

the funny thing is i started out with moving averages, then got into literally hundreds of different indicators and what they do and what signals they give, and came around full circle to realizing that it's all just moving averages. you literally trade based on what price and volume are doing, on average, over time. indicators just apply math to this to make it easier to see.

generally speaking you're looking for things to be rising on average, and having positive values, when you want to take a long position. you want things falling and having negative values, when you want to short. if they don't agree, like say a positive/rising short term MA vs. a negative/falling long term MA, you're likely ranging. it's pretty simple, a lot of my work has just been a matter of optimizing around these general ideas.

Everything will crash back to reality once the bill continues to be stalled along with published unemployment numbers and skyrocketing cases that will erase most gains made this week while continuing to trend red for the foreseeable future, doubly so if Congress takes recess.

volume-weighted shit is mostly about keeping you out of choppiness. it can also be used for high probability setups, hell i know people who literally just trade off of VWAP setups alone.

a fun tip: instead of doing price crossing and closing beyond a MA, use a super fast MA like an EMA(5) or even EMA(3). it should keep you out of times where the price oscillates around the baseline too much, instead of having a candle you reduce price to a single point. the key is that it's extremely fast, single digit period. what number you choose is up to your discretion, but i've always been a fan of choosing some kind of fib number. i use 3,5,8,21,34, and 89 a lot, but it's not much different than say 5,10,20,50,100 kind of stuff, it's mostly about what you consider a short/med/long term number.

Wavelet decomposition is basically the decomposition of time series data into a base function. It's very similar to fourier. But instead of using sine waves you can use almost any function. Depending on your data there are base functions which work well and functions that don't work well. In this case it comes down to the most elemental stock move.(I guess) Once you have your decomposition you can rebuild the time series but leave out the high frequency parts which then gives you a low pass filter.
It's compromise in the time-fequency unsharpness problem.

i understand what EMAs are, are you saying you use a 3 or 5 day EMA instead of candles on a chart for an indicator of where you consider price to be, in terms of buying and selling?

The idea being candles can go above and below 20 or 50 EMA every day during choppy periods, and the 3/5 EMA avoids you buying and selling daily? would be interesting to use a line instead of candles for purchase decisions...

>> No.18084419

>>18084031
candles are still important, they tell you what range the price is trading in, the open-high-low-close or OHLC. but for signals, if you use a fast MA you can reduce it down to a single point, which helps in terms of determining crossovers. you'll notice that in a lot of cases you'll see price crossing the slower MA a bunch but the EMA(5) stays below it, which would basically indicate that you're probably ranging with a bearish bias. you still need the actual candles to see where price is trading at to consider where you should set your limit orders at in the price range.

this also works better in day trading, the problem with trading on the daily time frame is that you get gapping, especially with the current crisis going on. gapping tends to fuck up moving averages, because it creates outliers. the best signals are when price follows the average as closely as possible. you determine this using volatility indicators, the main one being the ATR or average true range, which basically tells you what the average price range over a period of time is. if the average size of a candle is $0.20 on the 1m timeframe, and you get a candle that has a range of $0.40 then it's twice the ATR and probably high volatility. ideally you'd want a trend with a bunch of roughly $0.20 candles.
