Also historically, for example in the works of Descartes and Kant, the sentience of animals, or in this case, the lack thereof, is their main argument for animals being excluded as having any moral value themselves. And sentience is to be understood here as the capability to experience pain and pleasure (this is of course problematic, because we can't be absolutely sure that animals can actually "experience" anything, we just assume so because they certainly can express pain and pleasure just like humans).

So the question of abortion, just like the question of animal rights, comes down to whether fetuses should be treated as morally valuable themselves (meaning that they don't derive their moral value from anything other than themselves). And if they are sentient, which is not that much of a stretch to assume if you assume that animals are sentient, then it is morally wrong to terminate their life.
