It seems like options are too expensive now guess il just buy the sqqq then

Of course options are too expensive now practically everyone expects SQQQ to go up

so just better to buy the stock then right?

>> No.17822712

Yes you're making less return on call options because the premiums are going up because its virtually certain it will go up. Calls would have been good to buy 3 weeks ago you could have gotten call options for realitivly cheap

It's the Vanguard exchange traded version of the S&P500 so you can bounce around with it like buying and selling a traditional stock, VFINX is the index fund that most 401ks have so it only gets purchased or sold at the close of business.

I have a 30-day holding period and pre-approval requirements for all trades except 401k so I usually look at the Index fund stuff

If my plan is to buy and hold, there is no point in getting the ETF version correct?

>> No.17823175

>>17823054
Almost nothing. The expense ratio is pretty cheap on VOO but it's really peanuts in the grand scheme. Most of the top 500 ETFs have extremely similar returns - you could go with either and you will get near-identical performance.

Personally, I have my entire 401k in the money market fund and I'm going to dump close to 100% of it in equities and VFINX (probably some percentage in the real estate fund) and my stock account I just transferred 40k to and will pick up dividend stocks since my 401k is covering the equities spread. My time horizon is 30 years though so if it keeps getting nuked over the next few months ill just clench my ass and hold on tight.

Correct it won't make an ounce of difference unless you're trying to buy mid-day pumps and dumps, you need the ETF for that. Like on Friday, if you tried to buy the Vanguard top 500 index fund in the morning you'd be one pissed asshole when trump brought his gaggle of hunks onto TV and bumped the market to 10% because you get the end of day closing price.

Why do you prefer an S&P fund over a Total Market fund?

>> No.17823352

Once things settle down (who knows how long that will be), then is the time to put your money in spy.

And yes, there's so many etfs. Just focus on ones like spy that follow s&p500 or qqq for nasdaq. There's tons of other ones that "beat the market" but have high expenses tied to them.

>> No.17823362

>>17823225
<3 wish you luck, probably wait it until later this week and let a little bit of the dust settle. no one is going to accurately time the bottom of this, so if we get a few more solid down days, it's probably a good time to buy in and hold it for the long term. Don't get nervous and sell it if the price continues to go down, SPY will be a solid hold when this is over and you'll come out with a great return.

i think you actual own the stock in a fund whereas an etf you dont. but im a brainlet so im not sure. always wondered this too

No reason in particular, at least not one that I'm qualified enough to answer. Most of my investment money is in my Vanguard 401k so for me, I get a great spread of the market by investing in
1) VINIX (for top 500)
2) VMCIX (mid-cap)
3) VSCIX (for small-cap)
4) VGSNX (for real estate)

For VITSX exists for total market index stuff.
