In california practically every large event has been banned, churches are being shut down, almost everyone who can work from home is. It's shocking the optimism right now. 2) some quantity of their own money is tied up in stock, whether as a result of just the nature of issuing stock and the restrictions on insider trading (they can't just dump it all right after their IPO), or point 3
3) Employees (both at the lowest level and the highest level) may have or receive compensation in the form of stock, they may even be given stock as part of a retirement portfolio

I don't know how new you all are but bear markets are notorious for their massive dips AND rips. You all need to understand the mechanics behind the price movement: no short positions to emulsify a drop lead to a meltdown after the final bull has bought. The sudden drop after everyone rushes for exits builds up a massive amount of short positions as the 'boat' tips to the other side, and those shorts then get blown out of the water when buyers step in and a short covering rally ensues. After the shorts are burnt out and the bulls think they are in the clear, the same cycle repeats. Right now, the put/call ratio clocked in a huge number - the same we saw before the December botton. We are about to see a face-ripping rally. Remember even in 2000 we saw a rally as big as 40% after the top was in. It of course was later crushed by more forced selling

Remember this

Following up on this post, I would also like to mention that statistically, 85% of all options expire WORTHLESS. The reason behind this is usually because the institutions that sell these options also work against them. If I am a bank, and I sell you a put option, I will then do what I can to pump the price of the underlying asset to make sure the put expires worthless and I keep the premium you paid.

This is no longer buying the top, it's at worst buying half way down. If you did the same in 2009, you would be hurting near the bottom but you would rapidly recover. You can also apply leverage so the recovery is even faster.

The ONLY caveat to what I'm saying is an unknown quantity of the automated computerized trading ("trading algos") is done by computer programs written to follow technical analysis voodoo.
And, while algos don't talk to each other or cooperate or anything (yet), their buying and selling dance is like the bee waggle dance that may signal other bees (algos) where to go (or in this case how to trade).

Each contract with worth 100 shares.

You have a strike price, meaning the contract is only valid if is above(call) or below(put). There is an expiration which means youre against the clock too so youre constantly losing value to time decay.
So I think stock XYZ is going up. Its currently at $100. I can purchase a call contract for a premium(this is what you pay up front) for any amount. You can buy in the money contracts or higher risk/higher reward ones which are out of the money.

Those contracts are always worth something until they expire...so If i does go up, the contract itself has more value because its more likely or already is valid.

my 3 call contracts are valid above $255 and it expires on 3/16. I bought them because i had a feeling we'd get a nice bounce(were oversold). So if SPY opens at $258 tomorrow, my contracts are in the money and have increased in prospective value. if SPY tanks on opening tomorrow, i lose major value, likely half my purchase price.

Options are no joke and are volatile even in non-volatile markets.

IN MY OPINION:
While I said you're gonna make it, just so you know it *might* be a cat bounce so technically you may have been able to buy in at a better price
and you might end up tempted to sell rather than hold over the weekend, but if you actually believe this is the great downturnening, you'll be up in the short term (as in next monday on)

That said, I'm in cash

I’m not saying that it’ll be all up from here, I guess what I meant is that I don’t think we’ll see a day worse than today, maybe 5% down Monday after a Friday that’s barely green. There was so much negative news around the US today and outside of catastrophic Coronavirus numbers the news won’t get much worse.

>>17765789
Well first you used past performance to indicate future results, then you said a virus with an incubation period of two weeks, but people who are infected now will not show up until two weeks from now and while there were big steps taken (like the ban on large gatherings) you won't see the positive effects of those measures until AFTER the people who are sick now show symptoms
You also said "big summer" (which I'll assume means a summer to the plus side) but that assumes the market doesn't get "surprised" by the bad earnings everyone is going to be showing (and yes, in theory it should be priced in, but then so should all of this).

And finally, it's only "dumb" if you're wrong; if you're right you're a genius and a saint
