crop everything behind approx. 1783 bc that's when the Industrial Revolution began to literally build steam (you can see it reflected in the graph). covid downturn still isn't as bad as the Great Depression but it's still a significant shock and the worst is yet to come

I like the 300 year crab market from 1600 to 1800.

Also, most of the gains since 1960 are inflation.

Fun fact the first time Europe had to deal with serious price inflation was when Spain brought in so much silver from the new world (specifically Cerro Rico) that it devalued the currency back in Europe and they didn't know how to deal with that at the time, since economics was just centered around the treasury of kingdoms at the time.

other fun fact the indigenous peoples who worked the silver deposits had done it for so many thousands of years that their grasp of precious metallurgy was better than anyone else in the world at that time. then spain traded so much fucking pure silver to china that their economy exploded and people died

Greedy monarchs or unforeseen consequences? Why didn’t the monarchs just hold onto the reserve silver to prevent saturation? I’m guessing the imported goods like spice and silk was too appealing to show off among the elites.

It is because Robinhood kept stealing the silver from the monarchs and distributed it amongst the guilds.
