This applies to most things in modern society, even getting your degree. Studying for the questions and studying for the actual knowledge are two completely different things with the former being the default for most of the students, yet both groups graduate the same way even if that first group has no idea what they're doing. Meritocracy doesn't exist when there are shortcuts like this so you might as well accept it as the norm. The only true display of meritocracy is by doing shit entirely on your own and that is impossible in modern society, and since that's the case, connections and sociability will always outweigh your personal lone wolf abilities hence the whole "you can't succeed without connection anymore". In fact, it's even worse than that - the people who go down this path of cultivating their personal skills do not become the CEOs and leaders of countries, they become the educated serfs. There is no point in striving to be good at something anymore.

Sure, but the degree to which we put up with it in out own lives is a choice. I didn't get a degree either because I learned pretty fast that the only classes that mattered were the core programming classes, and learning data structures and algorithms. Everything else was fluff and learning on the job or by doing personal projects was 100x more valuable. so I left early and it worked out better for me that way financially at least.
So now when it comes to looking for work, I see two different kinds of hiring styles. those that want to grill textbook knowledge, and those that want to talk to you about your actual work experiences. I do much better with the latter, so that's where I go. the type of environment is way better at these types of companies too. the fact that everyone has to study for these bs interviews goes to show how irrelevant the shit they are asking is to the actual job, which we're doing all day long.
