Don't worry Anon, as long as I can tell you are self aware and in great pain concerning your situation, I will not think less of you for being a cashier. I worked as one in highschool.

Inherently no. Now that being said, let me drop some advice on you from a 5 year retail salesman.

1) Everyone has to start some where, But Somewhere doesn't have to mean anywhere. You have the right to be picky about where you work. If you don't like what you are doing and don't have a kool-aid drinking tier motivation You'll probably subject yourself to a lot of pain and depression after a while.

2) Stick to your own morals, not the companies. If it doesn't make you feel good at the end of the day you shouldn't do it. A large part of retail is learning what you can and cannot control. Customers will dump baggage on you that's beyond your control. What you can Control is whether or not you can make them smile even for a minute during your interaction.

3) Customers can be cruel, Customers can also be fantastic. Treat them all excellently, even the difficult ones and the fantastic ones will stand up for you.

4) Make sure you have a reason to get out of bed to do the job. (this requires minor kool-aid drinking) I currently work as a non-commission salesman for a large electronics retailer in the Midwest. My reason I get up every day, fake a smile, and walk into my store and sell is. I am the person that is honest, I am the person that cares, I am the Salesman I want to interact with for everything. I want to make sure everyone I talk to in the day smiles, gets accurate Information, and never ever feels or is ripped off.

I was a cashier at a dollar store for a while

it was pretty chill as far as the work-load goes. easiest job i’ve ever had.

it felt degrading as fuck. maybe about twice every week you’d have a bad encounter with an idiot customer. I felt like a bitch whenever i bagged the groceries of people I knew

Now the things that are bad about retail, especially cashier work.

You will:
Encounter every Customer that buys something. In most stores like walmart, target, or other stores where salesmen don't sell they show you where it is and fuck off at least.
You encounter these customers whether they've had an excellent experience or not.
You will encounter them on the best days of their life and the worst.
You will have favorite ones.
Customers also have favorite cashiers. (whether or not you like them they could like you)
Customers will try to take you home.
Some will be creepy.
Some will have no sense of boundary or manners.
Some will treat you like trash.
Management might also treat you like this, if at any point they treat you like shit this isn't the right company and you need an exit strategy.
There are many other bad things about cashiering, next post the goods of retail.

>> No.17424486

>>17424468
with that being said, you get to see a lot of beautiful women and all kinds of milfs.

>> No.17424573

>>17424484
Now on to the goods of being in retail or cashiering.

You may make friends with coworkers.
You will have favorite customers that care and become psuedo-friends.
You will have the occasional person that you are the reason they come in and they will thank you for being so kind to them.
Regulars that are nice, and after a while knowing which regulars to avoid.
Easy money, mild work.

There aren't as many pros as cons, but I truly love when people thank me for all my work and tell me they only want to speak to me as a salesman. Its not a glamorous job but it has some really wholesome moments. I won't ever leave sales and intend to move into Home sales once i'm through with consumer Electronics.

nothing wrong with working easy retail jobs in high school and during your lower division collegiate career.

should move on to bigger and greater things past that, though

Nothing wrong with being a cashier.

Try to find a smaller mom and pop shop where you can establish a relationship with your employer instead of a large corp.

Make sure you can do mental math to make change . Memorize it like the times table if needed. One of the cringest things is when a cashier can't do basic math and gets all flustered.

The main downside is you are essentially a captive audience and some people will want to talk your ear off or dump their negative emotional bullshit on you. Can also have a lot of pleasant interactions too.

i actually started as a gas station cashier. it is absolute hell, get the fuck away as soon as you can. it is a good starter job if you dont have any connections, though. you can easily leverage that position to get a retail position at a higher-end grocery store. I did that, actually, and now im working a cushy union job while i'm in school.

(idk why you didnt take the waiter position... if you are attractive enough to get hired, then you should do that job instead)
