The Wuhan virus this time being less severe than SARS might be a bad thing. Only 1/4 people are severe and it takes 5-6 days before severe symptoms started appearing on those patients mean there's a fat chance that many patients are not being caughted and still walking in the wild and they are perfectly capable of further spreading the virus. In Wuhan it's reported that many residents there only staeted to treat the disease seriously and wear mask in public space after the government suspended all transportation out of the city, and the virus outbreak have already occurred in the city for two months.

http://www.caixin.com/2020-01-23/101507670.html
An experienced virologist, chairman of infectious disease research laboratory in Hong Kong University, said this time even their team would not be able to help despite they have identified source, transmission path and isolated early virus strain of SARS and Avian Flu fron field visit at the time.
He arrived Wuhan on the 22nd, that afternoon when he visit a wet market (bot the initial outbreak one) he was shocked. The market appeared to be totally peaceful, many are still rushing to buy new year celebration goods as if everything are normal, despite the transmission path out of the initial market was still unclear. The hygiene situation of these other markets were bad, floor were wet and ventilation were poor, and in that market there were only less than 10% people there who was wearing masks.
Later he met some local authority, then determined that the virus already cannot be contained in the city and rushed to buy a plane ticket out of the city on the next day.
On the next day at the airport he said he have been shocked again. Passenger flow in the airport have already dropped significantly from the CNY peak and somehow there are still group tours departing from the city. More difficult to understand is that they didn't sanitize the ground and there are only some staffs performing checks by manually holding a thermometer. Only very few places in the terminal, like in front of Starbucks, would you see a hand sanitizer being available. When he pass through security check and see the girl there wearing a simply mask, he told her the mask wouldn't work with the amount of passengers she have to face everyday, but she told him the mask was prepared by herself because their leader banned mask wearing due to kmage problem. He think it mean the local authority was totally working like all things are usual even at that point of time when the cebtral authority announced warring state two days ago.

It really is but they tend to have a few special weeks every 1-3 years when they absolutely moon. I have a good feel this time. snss anon is ...how do I say this?...a bit too fanboyish about this though. There's certainly a lot going on behind the scenes and I think they will pump this to at least 1 until June. When he tried to contact research organizations in the city, many rejected, he think they have rigid management and probably think they're capable in themselves. But he said the initial sea narket have already been closed on the 1st with everything cleaned, which would make it difficult to trace exactly which animal is the intermediate host of the new virus before it jump to human.
He believe the move to lock down Wuhan have already passed the golden prevention time. He mentioned that, on the 21st, there were already much less people in Wuhan compared to normal. Many migrant workers have already went back to their home place. If they contacted patients in the society in Wuhana and they're still in the period of incubation when they move out of it, they would become moving virus carrier bringing.the virus back to everywhere across the country. If we start counting from 17th and 18th when the CNY travel peak started, then everyone in the country should pay additional attention on 25th and 26th. Another problem is would those who travelled out of the city know how to self-isolate themselves. From his observation it doesn't seems like the Wuhan city government have made any calls to those outbound travellers, not even giving them the most basic instructions. On the 20th the Chinese central government already given order that this new disease should be treated like Class A disease where the only two diseases on the list are the plague and cholera, yet until 22nd Wuhan was still a city with no defence.

>> No.16957604

>>16957595
He believe that further outbreak is certain. Wuhan is located at the key traffic junction between all provinces it surrounded, and those oreventive measures missed the golden defense period before it started infecting the mass and it also missed the CNY period. Unlike SARS when over half patients are infected by a few superinfectors and it's only necessary to monitor those who contacted them, it's already impossible to track the transmission path down, and the cost to control it will be order of magnitudes higher. Conservative estimate this time the scale will be at least 10x the scale of SARS.

the problem will be much worse because they didn't properly lock down and quarantine two days ago, or yesterday, or today....
this thing is spreading, the Chinese central government seems to be taking it seriously (they are using strong language, at least) but it seems like their statements aren't effecting the situation at the local level.
That surprises me, because in the west we are lead to believe that China has very strong centralized powers, the central government can watch everyone and take action at any time... but it seems like that isn't happening.

there are already dozens known cases outside of the quarantined area, with more being found every few hours.
the enforcement of the quarantines are questionable at best. there is a possible case that every major population center in China and nearby will have significant infected numbers, many more than their medical infrastructure can deal with. I'm not going to speculate on death numbers, because that's still very unknown, but infection numbers are set to continue an exponential climb. We haven't seen the new case location announcements even begin to level off (meaning, new cases are being announced in other districts and other countries at the same rate or faster)

from the headlines and news tickers I'm seeing, it looks like people form Wuhan travel a lot... these people are all over the world.

Threadly reminder that SARS killed less people than the standard flu in the very same year of its peak. The numbers (dozens of cases!) in a country as densely populated as china is laughable. Wake me up when we have over one million deaths in a year.

I'm trading for the panic, and so far it's paying off nicely. If this one ends up fizzling out like the others, then fine, I'll make a few dozen percent on some minor options position.
If this one does blow up, the fact that everyone is discounting it for the reasons you stated mean that it's going to blow up big.
Everyone's been saying "oh no virus ever kills that many people" for a week now. We'll see. Infection numbers alone are enough to cause panic. If infection numbers don't level off, we are going to see some panic.

Not gonna put in stop loss. I prefer to monitor it myself. Gives me better control for random spikes avoidance. Too many times in the past my positions have been closed by seemingly randomly hit stop loss... after which price often bounced back.

You can never be 100% sure about company, but I've done my research to a reasonable degree, and I'm fairly confident it's not a crap company. It's a million mile battery. The technology already exists and has been partly patented. The guy who came up and is leading their research group was one of the early pioneers in lithium ion batteries.

Anyway, Tesla batteries already degrade at a rate of less than two percent a year on average, meaning most batteries will still have a lot of it's life left when the car retires from the road. This is just icing on the cake because they're also trying to beef up their motors on top of it already generally building a more reliable drivetrain than anything you'll find in an ICE vehicles. This is key for their robotaxi fleet but it also means you could get way more life out of your personal vehicle and the resale valve will be much higher. I'll link their recent study here. This has all been vetted by people in the industry and all the data is there if you wanted to verify it as well.

Well, seeing how company has a few investors who probably know a thing or two about fundamentals, I's say your opinion on that matter might not be exactly on point. Not that my opinion matter to you, or that yours matters to me.

And if you're talking about "diversify etc. etc." - well... that really depends. Diversification provides you with similar protection against losses... and profits. It changes company specific + market risks to only market risks if you diversify enough. Than you might as well buy index contracts. I want to have exposure to company specific risks, not market risks in general.

You can't, it's not effective. There are billions of tonnes of lithium in seawater, which can be extracted at a reasonable price if the other supply dries up. They already use that method with some minerals. Lithium has always been a relatively small industry, their proven reserves are going to shoot up if market demand keeps going. Also, it's entirely reusable so one day you many see a closed loop system where the old batteries just get sent back to the factory and get recycled into a new battery.

If you throw your dosh into something like MRRL you could average 100 dollars a month in dividends with an investment of only about 6000 dollars
MRRL is an ETN, and ETNs are decaying assets so the value of the underlying asset will erode over time if you aren't reinvesting those divvys

If you want something safe, I would just do SPYD. You'd need about 20-25K to get 100 dollars a month in dividends from this, but the underlying asset will (probably) grow over time without reinvestments

I'm not sure, according to Forbes the paper claimed a boost in energy density of the new battery but I don't remember anything about it. Who knows what chemistry they'll end up going with, but it will be a definite improvement on their already mostly reliable batteries. I think it's a nail in the coffin of any battery performance issue and it will extend range because with existing batteries, you shouldn't charge beyond 80% or go below 20% unless you have you. This would allow you to use cycle.

Another thing you may want to consider is the application in Tesla energy storage system and Tesla's attempt to replace peaker stations. This should decrease the cost of those installation and make it more competitive because of the longer lifespan. With falling battery prices, battery storage looks to be coming of age. I don't know if their energy division will be as big as Tesla like Elon Musk asserted, but it's looking disruptive.

SPCE
The way I see it... VG has no catalyst for downward movement. It won’t miss earnings, because it has no earnings and no one is expecting earnings. It won’t lose out on bookings, because the waiting list is several miles long. It won’t blow its timetable, because they are clearly ready to roll. So, between now and the day RB goes into orbit, there will be anticipation and PR like we’ve
never seen before. Shorts can call it hype and speculation but all new ideas are surrounded by hype and speculation. So what! The company is sexy and make no mistake, people will want a piece of the action. If all goes well, it will be a new era. Lots of revenue, very high margins and a phenomenal demand which will continue to mushroom out of control. And this does not even take into account the hypersonic travel which
will blow the lid off of his
company.

If you want to short this and bash it
into the ground, go for it... but you do not have a dispute as to why SPCE would drop. Consolidating today because it has climbed up from $7, is expected and a good sign with the support the stock just showed it is holding.

The whole davos focus is ESG, in other words sustainability. Banks are saying that they’re not going to fund these operations anymore, and asset managers are saying they’re going to pull them out of their ETFs and portfolios. On top of that, the coronavirus has the potential, though unlikely at the moment, to reverse the bottoming in global growth by rekting the Chinese economy.
Still probably a good buy, but it’s a falling knife situation.

I believe it applies to most lithium-ion batteries, including what's in your cellphone. Elon Musk recommended that you try to keep their battery between 80% to 30%. Tesla itself recommended under 90%, I think. Jeff Dahn, head of their battery research group recommended staying below 70% for optimization. With this technology, none of that would matter and you would always charge to full just in case you needed the extra range.

This obviously has applications outside of vehicles. Imagine a cellphone battery you couldn't kill and actually lasts longer than the phone.
