it's probably the least risky way to get rich but has the highest cost, both in money, time and mental energy

if you have an IQ above 100 but below 120, a physician is the best job for you. all you have to do is memorize retarded stuff. no math or thinking or brain power required. just memorize and mimic your peers.

Hey /biz/ quick question - can you imagine ANYONE that would do their job for no pay?
I mean LITERALLY no pay, and not like an unpaid internship either, since at least those have the prospect of potential future pay.

Is there any reason AT ALL to slave away at some stupid job and be compensated literally 0 (zero) US dollars for it.

For example - being responsible for the regulation of rules in some amusement park or library - and not being paid for it.

How retarded would you have to be to do that FOR FREE?

Is there a single logical reason anyone with ANY FUNCTIONING NEURONS AT ALL would willingly engage in such an arrangement?

I can't think of one.

this.

it will drain your mental energy, you will HATE being on-call, you will HATE sleeping at the hospital, you will HATE the mandatory obstetric, geriatric and pediatric rotations. you will feel like a robot without any emotion and you will resent the fact that it takes 10-15 years of slavery and wasted life before you make any significant money. the same money that goes towards paying loans anyway.

t. Family doc trapped in a profession that I hate.

Entrepreneurs don’t get paid at first and usually go negative. Maybe after a year or 2, they start raking in the money.

final year student here

it's been worth it for me so far. i'm not going to enjoy my foundation training years but afterwards i'll work very flexibly for great pay as a locum for a few years and build up my businesses.

having the medical background has opened up many ventures for me during medical school to do very well for myself.

also i find it hella creatively inspiring. my experience may be in the minority for that.

Are you lazy?
If yes do not become a doctor. Do something in IT.
If not, do you want to retire early? If so, do something in IT.
Do you really have an urge or a dream to become a doctor? If so, become a doctor. If not, maybe lawyer would work

It’s ok, hospital oncalls/nights/weekends while shit hours and unsocial didn’t mentally drain me. Seeing 30-40 patients a day does, but I Locum and this choose my hours, and make around 130k a year with about 6 weeks off unpaid. I choose where, when and how I work. The freedom is the best part. If I was better at maths, I would have gone into finance.

No, but my first job out of college was being a regional sales rep for a medical device company. I primarily sold products for neurosurgery, cardiology, ER, and electrophysiology. I lived in Southern Cal at the time and my territory was there plus all of Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico. I've went to hundreds and hundreds of hospitals over a course of 3 years. Reps actually get to know doctors pretty well, so I would say I maybe knew 50 on a close basis - I knew their hobbies, favorite type of car, what sports teams they are fans of etc.. Anyways, I can tell you that doctors are absolutely miserable. Some hide it very well, but I was actually shocked that of the 40 doctors I knew on a personal level were miserable. Yeah, they make good money, but most of them wish they could do something else. The only reasons they all still be doctors is because of the 8 years they spend in school. The only doctors that I have seen go into a completely new profession are doctors in the military. You wouldn't guess, but hospitals are SO fucking disorganized. These docs work 60+ hours per week sometimes - and if their beeper goes off when they are on call they HAVE to go are get fired unless they get someone to fill in for them. They also have to see depressing shit all the time - they literally work with dying people everyday. You can tell some of them are heavy drinkers. Now I'm sure there are docs who love their job, but I didn't meet/see any over 3 years. It was fucking depressing for them.
