I worked there once. Many of the employees stole. They basically can't do a single thing about it unless they catch you in the act.

I used to scam produce from stores at the self checkout. I'd ring everything up as bananas and save shitloads of money. One day an employee basically called me out on it. I have a theory. Surely Walmart is losing more money through "shrinkage" through self-checkout than the $11/hr they pay cashiers. And surely they know about that. I've also noticed Walmart in particular makes it really easy and convenient to steal from self-checkout without being noticed. I think they do it intentionally for marketing purposes. Instead of everything being on sale, Walmart is the store you go to because you can easily buy potatoes that look a lot like peaches. Try this experiment:

I went to Home Depot with a friend to get some supplies for his new apartment. He apparently grabbed a pack of face masks for paint fumes that didn't have a label. Former walmart manager here. Believe it or not, many walmarts have, and more are getting it, camera technology that is able to track when items aren't getting scanned. The walmart i worked at and the other walmarts in my city, save the video of these instances and file charges against the people that don't scan their items. I'm not even memeing. I don't think that's how it works. If you're more merely being monitored in a store, I'm not sure what you would sue for. There's nothing that stops a store owner or worker from observing what's happening on their own premises.

And especially, consider if the same people are doing this over and over again, that's even more probable cause an owner or employee would have to follow them. I don't think they could pull this off repeatedly at a single store, police would eventually catch on, getting camera footage, car license plates, identities, etc.
