everything is a competition, even if it doesn't look like it, especially when it doesn't look like it

the only way to get ahead is to consistently win in all competitions. even though everybody gets a prize, first place gets to rub elbows.

don't mistake the system for the rules. you don't have to play by the rules, but you have to play by the system. use the system, and subvert the rules.

be a team player, but fight for yourself. Help others help you by helping them be excellent team players. Elevate your team with you, but don't be afraid to upgrade your team.

HR will always lie to you, and will always try to keep you down. Make friends with HR people that have nothing to do with you to get intel over your own HR. You have no leverage over your HR, and it's designed that way. The only possible way to exert pressure on your HR is to win competitions and be noticed by sempais.

After multiple burnouts I learned to stop helping others.
I also found out the people I spent years helping never helped me once in my own work...
It does not make sense for a healthy/gifted individual to help others without a shared goal/task.
If helping others has no positive impact on your own work, but costs you time and energy, you will sooner or later learn to only help people who are worth it (who will/can help you or have a common goal)
Helping others without a reason is a good way to attract parasites and help these people get undeserved credit for "their work" which ends up increasing your own burden and making your life harder on the long run.

This can be connected to the law of power 7:
GET OTHERS TO DO THE WORK FOR YOU, BUT ALWAYS TAKE THE CREDIT
Use the wisdom, knowledge, and legwork of other people to furtker your own cause. Not only will such assistance save you valuable time and energy, it will give you a godlike aura of efficiency and speed. In the end
your helpers will be forgotten and you will be remembered. Never do yourself what others can do for you.

Management is often full of absolute retards who got their position by a) pure luck b) connections. The real pricks love to flex their power on you for no reason other than they can.

Ass kissing and faking productivity gets you way farther than actual "merit." I'm convinced that the vast majority of managers don't want to deal with problems, even if it's in their interest to do so. And what happens is, employees that care about the company are the ones that get pushed and shoved around and thrown under the bus. Not giving a fuck about anything or anyone, showing a very baseline level of competence, and never sticking your head up (except when it makes your superior's jobs easier) is how you win.
That said, the deeper you dive into any large company the more you realize you've invested most of your life into something you don't care about. Like I said before, have an exit plan. Retiring or starting your own company at 40-50 is becoming the norm.

Over time we've all been promoted and are now at different companies in the same industry and we compete in certain areas. There was one guy in the "superstar" role because of his knowledge.
Some other guy was talking to me and then started talking to him and it became obvious to me (maybe he did it intentionally) that he is trying to make it look like he is talking in two modes: when he is talking to me, he is talking to a mere mortal, a peasant, when he is talking to a "superstar" - it's like two superstars having a conversation. What I felt was a weird feeling, I think it was a mix of contradictory feelings.

I was gonna mention this one. The reward for getting your shit done early is having more shit thrown at you, but getting your shit done late is met with penalties. The winning move is to get shit done early but pretend to get it done on time, and spend the few days between finishing and "finishing" doing whatever or studying something for a better job. Work from home schemes are a godsend for doing this.

>>16789160
The other one is something I began to notice a lot after someone in a /biz/ thread pointed it out. You'd assume that the main purpose for an enterprise to exist is to help whatever thing it's attached to, but in reality it exists to jerk off egos and waste time. If someone in a higher position than you tells you to do something inefficient, don't complain and just do that thing. You're still securing your bag once it's all over, there is zero reward for improving efficiency. If you're being swamped with inefficient assignments, you didn't follow my advise in the prior paragraph and need to start over with a new job.

I think if you said that you're going to finish the work at some point in time, and you finish it earlier and spend free time learning interesting stuff, someone can say that it's pretending or faking productivity, but someone can say that it' not.
Imagine you are doing some work and the work involves being in route (let's say in train) for several days. If you read something interesting while you are in train, are you pretending or faking productivity?
I think that's a downside of measuring productivity with time spent. Measuring "ass in the seat" time. When the work involves a lot of thinking, the worker needs some time to take a rest before switching contexts. When we have a rule that all the time between 9 am and 5 pm is a working time, is the worker supposed to instantly switch contexts? And if he takes time to rest, he is pretending and faking productivity? I think people differ in their ability to instantly switch contexts, I wonder how they do that, are they superhumans?

Obviously, if the help is one-sided, you'll have to stop letting yourself be a doormat. It shouldn't take years to find out. Unfortunately, some people have to learn it the hard way, like I did.

>Helping others without a reason is a good way to attract parasites and help these people get undeserved credit for "their work" which ends up increasing your own burden and making your life harder on the long run.

The reason is the expectation that they would help you in return in the future. If they don't reciprocate in anyway, then you need to cut them off. The reality is people are always using each other, but there's a difference between a mutually beneficial relationship and a parasitic one.

>GET OTHERS TO DO THE WORK FOR YOU, BUT ALWAYS TAKE THE CREDIT

This can work against you. People would remember what you've done. You may gain a short term advantage, but in the future, if you ever cross paths again the people you've stolen credit from and they're in a position where they have leverage over you, you might be in trouble.

I think it also involves the sense of attachment or ownership.
If you organize the work in such a way that it's like a treadmill, then you create a stream of boredom in the system. That's what they forget or don't see.
Make a worker see a bigger picture. Make him understand what is going on. Create a system in which the more you work, the more you get.

It's like a cult or something, at the center of it - the superstar, and those who are closer to him (or think that they are closer) belittle those who they think are mere mortals.

If it was meant to incentivize being knowledgeable - I'm ok with honoring the knowledge and being skilled.

This.

I love to build things. Humans do. All we ever did up until recently was build shelter and tend to farmland. The best I can do in my day job is design projects, come up with specs, and have the grunts do the work/implementation. It leaves me feeling slightly empty inside. In my side business (a multimedia company) I get to design projects, come up with specs, and implement/work everything out myself. Nothing beats the satisfaction of enjoying the fruits of your own labor after grinding it out for a few days or weeks on end.

The reason for why a lot of highly paid white collar workers in finance, sales, marketing, and other similar fields with a highly corporate feel have shitty, empty, and meaningless lives is because they aren't creating anything that's theirs. idkwirow, it seems to me that if you are playing with the system (in the sandbox), you will build the organization where workers play with the system.
if you are on a treadmill, you will build the organization where workers are on a treadmill.

because if you build something while playing, you will share that thing with others, and others will play and build on top of that thing.

I think the difference becomes visible when then beginner, the newbie appears.
what is the process of learning the system, of starting to work with the system?

one organization can say: here is the system (or here are systems), you can play with this thing, you can play with that thing.
other organization can say: here are a bunch of tasks, start working and don't you dare fake the productivity.

I think it's easy to recognize the treadmill pattern in one of these two organizations.

When you help somebody, they always take credit for your work, because nobody else will know you helped them do it.
This leads to them getting more power in the company which ultimately fucks you up, because you gave achievement and ultimately power to someone incompetent.

the reversal of the rule states:
There are times when taking the credit for work that others have done is
not the wise course: If your power is not firmly enough established, you
will seem to be pushing people out of the limelight.
To be a brilliant exploiter of talent your position must be unshakable, or you will be accused

Its incredibly sad how true is this even in technical fields like software development and engineering. I managed to fix something that nobody on the team could for three years and was eventually shelved and put out of sight until it became such a problem that it had to be done right now (or the whole product would seize up). Brought it up on review, was dismissed as unimportant, and made some enemies by being "too good and a showoff".
