The honest answer is it depends on what you value. Do you value independence? Then stay where you are. You're going to have a hell of a time dating if you're still living at mom and dad's.

Do you want to retire as early as possible? Then go live at mom and dad's. The more you save, the earlier you'll be able to retire.

You could also try the first option with reduced expenses (i.e., public transportation and going out less/to free events).

Everything has costs and benefits. I don't think there's a right answer but make sure whatever you do gets you closer to your goals.

So what, like 5%? That's really not much. Your 401k can be up to $19,000 tax-free, plus another $6,000 in your IRA. If you pay anything to the feds, you're doing it wrong.

Well you would think finance would be taught in HOME ECONOMICS, but apparently learning how to bake bread and make kool-aid is more important. I think the main reason it isn't taught is because schools would want finance, business, or accounting majors to teach the class, and most people with those degrees don't end up teaching outside universities.

Home finance could easily be a part of home economics though.

Because people would learn how to manage their finances, they wouldn't spend as much and would actively seek smart ways to save up more money. Modern society is built on segregation, we need to have a lower, middle and upper class because if everyone were smart enough to understand that money doesn't grow on trees (upper class) our system would collapse because people wouldn't consume as much as society requires of us today. However, this is good for smarter people because we can just keep being smart about our personal economy while society makes us richer and the dumb people poorer.
Not to mention that our society today needs to have a lower/mid class because of shit jobs until robots becomes even more widespread. That's when I think society will change some things because it would be more profitable to do that even for the elite.

Bingo. That's forever money right there. That's the golden goose that you'll be relying on from age 65 to 120, and then pass on to your sixteen grandchildren.

Sometimes people don't like this, because they want to spend the money before that age. But if you can't afford to max your retirement accounts, I would argue you can't really afford to do anything else with that cash either. A couple exceptions would be paying down debt, stocking your emergency fund, and maybe (big maybe) saving for a house or to start a business.

But I understand that I'm an extremist on this. Try to find a balance that works for you.

That's not the point of what I wrote. Rich people are not stupid enough to spend their money on garbage that they can't afford, the upper class saves much more, they spend much less on gas and utilities in terms of percentage. The upper class people are way more likely to behave selfishly compared to the lower and middle class. Meanwhile, the lower and middle class spends more than they can afford because of consumerism... hence why I said they believe money grows on trees. Sure, it LITERALLY grows on trees for the upper class but the upper class is upper for a reason.

Obviously I'm including basic necessities like food and housing as things you should fund before your retirement, but that goes without saying.

I don't make enough to fully fund mine. I put in $11,000 a year, plus $6,000 each in my IRA and my wife's IRA (nice thing about those is you have much more control over what you buy). I'm not living on rice and beans, but I don't have many luxuries either.

I'm building an emergency fund over the next few years that would fund 1 year of living expenses and then a little extra. that way when I retire early, I'll have a year cushion if the market is in a bad place when I retire and I can use it to allow my investments to grow instead of pulling divvies. i'm 1/3 of the way there (maybe more with inflation)

I wanted to do some 5g stocks but all the tech companies shares are so expensive now and I would only be able to afford just one, and it makes me sad because 5g stocks will be one of the only biggest booms in my lifetime, and by the time I've earned enough money to buy I would have already missed this train.

So I'm desperate to find the next big thing that hasn't even reached a penny yet, I want to make big short term investments now so I can afford the long term investments.

I'm telling you, Nokia and Ericsson will be gold in the 2020s. Even if we enter a trade war in the future between large countries, these nordic companies will be rock solid to keep on developing, testing and selling widespread. For example, they tested shit in both China and USA during the trade war while the larger players got the hammer until things eased. Not to mention that they have good relationships with the large players aswell, which might mean future cooperation with more.
Also, Both Nokia and Ericsson are both multi-billion dollar companies with stocks that are close to their decade lows.

Zoomer here feeling salty that boomer dad is talking about his gains in the market while I'm stuck in crypto and bagholding to oblivion.

I've tried options before and I tend to lose, thinking it's more of a gamble than buying shares or a stock and hodling. Am I doing it wrong or is that the way it is? I find it no different than margin trading on crypto.

Also I want to get into the stock market since I know ridiculous insta gains gain be earned than waiting for crypto pump. Any advice on the best place to begin? I'm generally impatient by how slow this market is but if you do options it's fast and I like that, but more risky.

I'm willing to dip my toes again into stocks, but how are you playing the game and why are so many people here discussing? In my limited experience, the most talkative are the options gamblers than the people that just buy dividend stocks / blue chips and HODL.

Whereas in the crypto space, the discussions are for developments and possible insider information for the flash mega pump/dump that may happen in a day or hour (that stocks cannot really do) since the market is so volatile.

Find a handful of things you would like to know more about and research them like hell. Narrow it down to a few products and run with them. You're gonna fail more than you win. Ditch the losers and run the winners into the ground.

Like in the markets, set stop losses and limits. You don't want to throw money at a sinking ship.

But I think most people are overlooking Nokia and Eric simply because they currently have bad statistics and are much smaller than the large players, which will most likely change in the 2020s in the fresh tech boom. I’m 4 weeks new to trading, I fell into some traps early, but decided I’m going to be a more analytical trader. I want to make informed decisions with minimal risk for now. I’ve been spending a lot of time watching videos on stock chart patterns to watch, entry/exit points, SMA/EMA explained, etc. and I think I’m starting to understand. Maybe I’m getting a little lucky too.

CORV was good to me today, I didn’t sell yet. I bought SNSS early on because I was brand new—sold most of my shares at a profit when it spiked, offloaded the rest today. GUSH was also a winner for me today. My first call with RAD ($20) is looking promising.

My biggest loser is still CEI—I’m foolishly holding on hoping it will go back up. I refuse to lose more money to them so I’ll just have those shares forever I guess.

Anyway I appreciate all of you guys. I’m going to continue to keep my eye on bio stocks and allocate more of my investment profits to hedge funds to be safe.
