I’m paper trading trying to learn the ropes. I can’t tell if I literally have bad timing, but every stock I buy always goes down in price after I buy it. Take a closer look at past instances of indicator sell signal vs the chart movement. It's not uncommon for an indicator to pop sell signal on a large green day with good volume, which is then followed by a couple days of drawdown as people take profit. You can adjust by buying a day or two after the buy signal, or adjust the parameters of the indicator such that the signal occurs slightly later.

>>16658744
Yes. Unless your indicator flips and tells you to sell, in which case gtfo. But don't use just one indicator. No indicator in existence works well completely on its own. You need others to shit check it.

Go back through old charts and compare what your widgets said vs. what the chart actually did. Do this repeatedly on a variety of stocks and measure rate of win vs loss, how much drawdown there was in the trend, how much you would have hypothetically gained on a win or lost on a loss. In order for indicator based TA strat to work you need to test the hell out of it and be intimately aware of its limitations.

I had a wonderful dinner with the family last nite, my grandpa even said I cooked the steak perfectly. I have a ham in the oven right now, hopefully tonite will be good too! Great haul for presents this year, mainly from my mommy. I’m still not certain. I’m sure many investors knew about this well before I did, but I sold, and now it looks like it was right about the bottom. Then today I’m hearing pres trump signed new agreements into law on Tuesday with ICE and private prisons, days before California was set to ban them.

It’s just one of those plays that’s “too hard” to game. The market has been indicating that there’s nothing to fear in impeachment, so it would be very strange for this corner of the market to be saying otherwise.

Pic related is what I’m talking about.

Here’s what really seems to be in play:

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/geo-group-signs-contracts-u-115500536.html

I knew that the seasonality chart had GEO making a remarkable nearly parabolic move upwards, and that it likely had something to do with federal budgets being agreed to in that time of year, but I didn’t see this coming. I’m a damn fool, I sold at a big loss at the exact time I should’ve been buying.

But I hear “class action lawsuit” and think shit this could be bad. And I’m not sure seasonality charts can be relied on at all.

There are some differences. Going short in forex doesn't have added fees as you're just buying the opposite currency in the pair instead shorting in the way you would with a company's shares (borrow, sell, cover, return borrowed shares). There's also the added control on specific amount of leverage you wish to use.

For common shares it's usually cheaper to buy puts than short directly. Theta decay being the drawback.

I sure as hell didn’t.

There’s many reasons, but many of us also just invest in individual companies IN ADDITION to holding index funds.

There’s also that the last 10 years of bull run may not continue like this, and some of the companies in the index are shittier than others and more likely to fail in hard times, so adding exposure to better companies could pay off.

There’s really too many reasons for me to bother typing, you should be able to think of reasons on your own, and if you don’t enjoy the idea of buying individual stocks, you’re probably better off just buying SPY/VTI every paycheck and forgetting about it.

>AMRN

I think AMRN's days as an independent company is numbered. Why? Cause if you knew you had a goldmine at your fingertips you'd be marketing the shit outta it as soon as you could in order to rake in as much Profit as fast as you could. What have we seen post FDA approval? Apart from an interview on CNBC (which said not much of anything) not a thing. It's like the FDA good news never happened. The clock on Profit earning is ticking. 2030 will be here before you know it. It makes since to bag as much as you can while you can. So all this silence kinda means that they don't care much about marketing nor partnerships. I think the deal is getting worked up now. Once the litigation is over with then a formal thing will be announced.

Once AMRN delivers the Green Bags to me capital won't be an issue. More T-babies and more into my Funds. Then if ONTX coughs up a dollar or more hey all the better. Every little bit helps you know.

Yeah that's kinda me. My few stocks are companies I actually give two shits about for various reasons. AMRN, ONTX for the short term gains/profits. Honestly don't care more than that. Once I get my money I'm selling them both (although when I'm an old fuck I'll prob be taking some generic version of AMRN). My other stocks I plan to hold long term cause I do care about them. And you know they will make me a bit of green to so hey that's even better. Mostly my investments will be split between 3 funds once AMRN delivers the goods.

>> No.16660911

>>16660904

AMRN will be ok and soon this latest stock movement will be all like a bad dream. The company has constantly hit the projections laid out by management. Profit/Sales is climbing higher. It's FDA backed. I mean hell what more could you ask for? Now if Profit was tanking, sales were slipping or other shit inside the company then I'd have sold at 26 and ran

Wouldn't be a shocker if AMRN got bought before January is over with for 45 - 50 a share. Profit don't lie. Big Pharma won't let AMRN keep anywhere close to 8 billion. People get you know "bumped off" for only a puny 5k now so yeah.. What would you do for 8 billion? What would Big Pharma do? Open the checkbook that's what.

I do our taxes each year. This is how it works. Each year during Tax season the brokerage will send you (or you can download it) a summary of all your trades. This summary is also sent to the IRS. Each important bit that needs to go on the tax forms is marked. You just fill in the "blanks" on the tax forms as needed. Same way you input your W-2 information or any interest income earned on savings. A key thing to remember is to don't rush into doing your taxes right away. Sometimes the brokerage likes to do late minute updates to your summary. So if you do your taxes and they do this update then you have to file an updated return.

For me AMRN is not just another stock. Some people just go "hey if I make money great, if I don't oh well" Which is fine and to be honest that's the right way to go about it. But for me, losing money on the deal was never an option cause I need all the money I can get. Long story short; I'm 36, didn't save as much as I should've during my 20's/early 30s. So now my retirement plan is kinda lacking. AMRN is a way to correct that mistake and give my retirement plan a big kick in the ass. Sure I've got a pension and a 401 and now a brokerage, etc. Both the pension and 401 are doing rather well, but still. It don't mater how good the investments are doing if your still behind as it were. All the retirement people tell you this; "by age 40 your on track for a nice retirement if you have double your salary in the bank (or invested)" Thanks to AMRN I'll hit that mark about 4 years sooner.

Yes it may dip but tank? Hell no. The party as they say is just getting started. There's still more good news in the wings. Canada approval for one, a Buyout for another. Even if a buyout don't take place for a while, so what? The stock price will climb all throughout the year due to demand and drug profit out the ass. There's a shit load of people in the U.S alone who can now take this drug. Add Canada and the rest of the world to that and well, to say this current price is "cheap" is putting it very mildly.

It would not be a surprise if Big Pharma knocks very loud on AMRN's door over the weekend/all next week. With a very nice deal in place before Christmas. They know the time to buy AMRN is before they can get the ball rolling. Cause the longer AMRN goes it alone the higher that stock price will climb and thus the more Green Bags Big Pharma would have to fork out.

At any rate, the hard part is over with. Now those who're in AMRN can kick back and relax a bit. Really the only thing you gotta concern yourself with is just what the hell your gonna do with your Fat Wads

Reminder: When Big Pharma comes knocking the Green Bags start Flying.. Marketcaps mean shit if Big Pharma wants the company bad enough. What the CEO personally wants doesn't mean shit either. Long as the Board has the majority votes and shareholders give it the thumbs up then Big Pharma wins. Really though you'd have to be dumb as hell to turn down a Fat Green Bag (or two) stuffed full of Cash.

With all the good news it's important not to let the lure of the Fat Green Bag to get outta hand. Sure you'll get a Fat Bag but over doing it is just setting yourself up for despair and gloom if it doesn't come to pass. I look at it like this: If I get 45 - 50 per then hey its all good for me. If I get over 50 per then that's just extra gravy. I'm not talking about just the buyout price either but also the stock price itself. Low balling your expectations will save yourself a lot of mental pain later. Then if you exceed those expectations you can celebrate like mad.

Haha, Nothing can stop AMRN now! Profit shall rain down like mad for ten years starting Monday!. Nothing can keep the stock price down anymore either. By this time next year the current stock price will seem "cheap", that is unless the Holy Buyout happens, which for all we know may happen before Christmas. P.S My T-babies just Hiked that Fat Divvy some more. So double the good news for me, haha.

Some thought me mad as hell, others thought me "retarded" but who's the last one laughing now. The dude who's sitting on a gold mine thanks to AMRN or the dude who dismissed my claims as madness? Haha, fuck the haters and all that shit here's to me finally getting a nice Fat Wad of Green in the bank as well as kick starting my long range plan of a comfy retirement when I'm age 50 and age 65. I took a big ass gamble but oh hey look at that it's paid off for me in the end. Let that be a lesson to all; I always win in the end.

usually, no. the pump is where the money is made. after the pump a pharma basically has two routes, look for a buyout (which doesnt happen often) and to keep going as an independent company and if they do that, their stock will either bleed down through dilution trying to fund new drugs or stagnate for years.

I've been in contact with a variety of silverware manufacturers and pirates.
Look for further unusual silver price movement in Q2 2020.
Q1 2020 is going to be surprisingly boring for equity and metal prices: people will be expecting some upward or downward moves, but nothing will happen.

no reason that the buying continues at higher prices (yet). I say this as someone holding physical metals and shares of miners. My connections in the pirate industry and the silversmithing industries are very clear about the near-future demand prospects.

Could be. I believe this rise is due to increased demand as institutions prepare for more market volatility.

This doesn’t make sense to me. Central banks all the world over have a more or less constant demand. They have to buy a certain amount of gold every year, i assume some silver too.

Palladium and platinum... not sure what’s going on there.

>>16661954
I was told to expect it to pop off in January... not sure if this is the pop in question. I bought some at exactly the worst time, it seems.

Equities usually have a bullish first half during an election year, so I’m not sure what you base that off of.

I’ll just HODL my Barrick for now I guess... should’ve allocated more to gold and less to silver.

I may also HODL my PILL. I expect a good January for pharma.

>Central banks all the world over have a more or less constant demand
In any case, market instability fueled the last run up on gold/silver prices earlier this year. Anticipation of more of that kind of thing incoming is the likely driving force behind the current breakout. Bearish catalysts would be swift unexpected progress on the China trade situation and potentially dovish fed. I expect fed to be neutral leaning hawkish for 2020.

Well yeah you gotta make trades to understand how trades work better. You could paper trade put credit spreads I guess. However, if this is a small enough amount of money you're not going to put a real dent in your portfolio if it goes wrong then sure, go go.

>> No.16662682

Some spreads on rh can be as cheap as 50-100 bucks.

Just gotta price the good ones, the best part is you gain on theta decay as time passes and get paid upfront.

>> No.16662704

>>16662575
i think it's probably safer to just trade delta neutral and like focus on a sector you know.... the market is really fucking fickle and comes down way faster than it goes up... the good thing about a spread is you're pay out is theta, and you can be wrong, but if you close the short half and still end up with stupid profits... personally i think a great trade would be like short bac and long sti and db with the weight being pretty much neutral let it go for 6 months, and you profit when DB and STI do better than BAC.

>> No.16662760

>>16662662

Hmmm instead of buying calls on the KO and PEP dips I could do put credit spreads... that sounds good and yeah the whole reason I want to do it is because of the theory that most options expire worthless so be the dealer and profit off of theta decay...

I tried selling a put recently but it required toooo much collateral so I just thought I’d enable spreads and play around with them.
>>16662670
It’s not tooooo bad. But I’ve got too many limit orders just sitting and waiting to trigger in my Rh profile. Most of them, the thesis is still damn good but I’m sure there’s some dumb ones lurking in there that will be less of a “buy the dip” and more of a knife-catch.

I’ll just start small... even though those LMT spreads are very tempting, that’s not going to tank 20% in 6 months. But... I don’t know how easy they are to close one they’re open.

Yep. The current uptrend in equities is about to halt and dip for a minor 10% correction Q120, with the top being put in sometime before year end as folks sell their losers for tax loss harvesting.

I'm expecting Monday and Tuesday to be red. Thursday/Friday may yet put in new highs for the equities indices. PMs will continue their rally as protection if you're not in by next Tuesday, you will have missed most of the move. If you own GLD or SLV, I'd start selling covered calls for 145 and 18-19 once the big upward moves are out of steam.

Anon mentioning the Q1 stagnation seems on point. This is a rlief rally to regain what was lost during the last few months of Fed pumping. It always defies logic when PMs go down during expansionary monetary policy. The bankers only want to move PMs on their cue.

January and Q1 in general look like they may relax in general. Gonna be more of a stock picker's market. I don't expect a huge correction so soon after the 2018/2019 volatility, but shedding 10% is not out of the question after the phenomenal run we just experienced in Q4. Just wont be able to throw a dart and make money.

I expect Amazon to surprise with a combo of record breaking online sales and underbudget shipping expenses, all while eating FDX's lunch. 1/30 ER will probably be a big one to re-launch the stock toward $2000 again.

Oh 12 years or so now.

I agree on the rotation toward the flatliners and losers of 2019. Personally, I'm done with semis for the short term, except maybe NVDA. Looking for a short entry on AMD as it approaches the ATH of 48.xx. I'd recommend SOXS if it wasn't for that goddamn terrible decay on up days, so puts on SOXX or SOXL may be best.

Cloud stocks have been a mixed bag. A lot of the ones on my radar that were raided hard in 2019 have rebounded near their old highs (TTD, PAYC, SHOP, OKTA are my most traded), but there are still quite a few that have lagged or are still falling post-IPO (CRWD and PD come to mind). There is a lot of potential in this segment...stocks with nice volatility for options traders...but the better companies like PAYC SHOP and TTD may really shine if they can continue to show growth while building that bottom line.

the DJIA laggards have been interesting to me all year but I've resisted hopping in for obvious reasons. IBM MMM WBA PFE CSCO are all on my priority list if good setups form with compelling stories to push them out of the doldrums. Not gonna force it though.

I think AMZN washington risk is overblown for now. Purely technical, the stock has got to shit or get off the pot soon. 1800+ or back to $1300 land it goes. For some reason I just don't see the market going bearish on AMZN in the midterm. One more $2000 attempt is in the cards.

I’m leaning towards yes, and they may be able to report exciting new stuff for JPM’s January conference, I just haven’t been following too closely.

any nearterm headwinds likely come from this new fda approval for a generic version of Eliquis from rival companies.

I’m not sure if this article is legit, but it says that “Eliquis Accounted For 28% of Bristol-Myers Squibb’s Total Sales In 2018” which is pretty huge. But it also says it’s still patented until 2026, so I’m not sure how that works. I thought that meant rivals couldn’t come out with generic versions.

https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/bristol-myers-squibbs-eliquis-has-added-over-%241-billion-in-sales-each-year-but-can-this

Long term, the concern is how well their cancer drugs opdivo and Yervoy can stack up against Merck’s Keytruda. I think there’s potential there but they might be fighting an uphill battle. I think they both also have postential for expansion into China. I like them both, prefer Merck, but am hoping for a pullback before I can maybe get some January calls.

Check this out, there’s more stuff comparing the two on google. Not sure how they stack up in terms of financials or P/E.

https://www.thepharmaletter.com/article/battle-of-pd-1-inhibitors-keytruda-vs-opdivo

And a 2016 article that suggests trial design might by bmy’s big flaw
https://blogs.sciencemag.org/pipeline/archives/2016/10/10/keytruda-vs-opdivo-no-contest

Anyhow, I don’t know, I wouldn’t say they’re a bad company, but they’re not as attractively priced as they were a month or two ago, and my calls are bleeding back to breakeven. I do think Morningstar just downgraded them from under-priced to appropriately priced.

Whither SOXL? Face it. Semiconductors are crack in all but name. The desire for newer, faster, more is insatiable. Computers, GPUs, self-driving electric cars, AI enhanced smartphones, medical devices, microcontrollers, networking, machine learning, surveillance, infrastructure, deadlier war machines, the list is endless. No matter how many cores, how fast or efficient, demand requires bigger, faster, cheaper, and better. The clamor for fresh silicon gives nary shit for national identity, creed, hue, gender, asshole virginity or other vain conceit; the multitude speaks in singular. The plea: semiconductor.
What delights most Christmas morning? More socks or the new drop semiconducters blinken the lights.
SOXL gets you on the receiving end. SOXL, is a 3x leveraged ETF coupling a single instrument with broad high return semiconductor exposure then juicing the already stellar results further via triple leverage, and rebalanced daily to boot. The SOXL pill aligns your economic interests with those of powerhouses like Nvidia, Qualcomm, Intel, Broadcom, Micron, Texas Instruments, Applied Materials, et al. Each one a refreshing juxtaposition to the now overloaded "tech company" phrase, these names reach daily into the body tech directly beating the heart of a real tech revolution. The tech revolution is the hardware.
The last 7 years, SOXL has appreciated 42x. Those fortunes already made but indulge a projection here. Advances in silicon and primitive machine intelligence wrought therein seemingly inch forward in measured steps yet closer inspection resolves the crude linear progression into precise exponential. Exponential curves have a knee and when the knee in the growth of the semiconductor space is reached, 42x returns will seem laughably quaint with orders of magnitude more are still to come.
Stop waiting for the "pullback". Where we're going, fretting over a few dollars is meaningless. The deliberation is over; waiting is a failure mode. Now. Buy it now.

They have a slightly negative correlation, but for the most part they move independently (at least according to my amateur Excel work). I guess it could just be random chance.

There might also be volume effects going on, right? Like, Christmas week is low volume, which could exaggerate any swings?

Because it's not pumping based on anything, the market is pumping because the government is making sure billions flows in to keep us afloat. Without the helping hand we would probably be well into correction territory by now. The rise in gold/silver is showing us the markets are not healthy if you ask me, BUT gold is famously manipulated aswell so.. who the fuck knows.

It may still run higher and if it doesn't, I'm not expecting it to drop below 385 unless there's some very negative news that gets released. It seems to me that there's so much support for this stock because the average investor which didn't want anything to do with it before, largely because of the FUD and other lobbying by the oil companies, now fears that they're going to miss out on the next AAPL. TSLA was criminally undervalued for years and before the recent bull run. It had the same price as before the Model 3 even existed and they were a much smaller company with terrible financials. This was before their lead in technology was demonstrated as well, the megapack installations, solar rework, and obviously before the new Chinese factory.
