The reason to buy individual stocks is to increase your exposure to those individual stocks... You should do it if you're really bullish on them in particular, or you think they're undervalued with respect to the rest of the index.

If you'd have bought extra apple during the trade war FUD, or extra LMT at pretty much any time, you'd have been rewarded more than just having owned only the index.

Hmmm... 9-5 for MRK... that’s not terribly reassuring
>KENILWORTH, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 17, 2019-- Merck (NYSE:MRK), known as MSD outside the United States and Canada, today announced that the Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee (ODAC) of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) voted 9-4 in favor of recommending KEYTRUDA, Merck’s anti-PD-1 therapy, for the treatment of certain patients with high-risk, non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC).
>The ODAC discussions were based on the supplemental Biologics License Application (sBLA), currently under priority review at the FDA ...
>The ODAC provides the FDA with independent, expert advice and recommendations on marketed and investigational medicines for use in the treatment of cancer. The FDA is not bound by the committee’s guidance but takes its advice into consideration. Merck anticipates a Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA), or target action date, in January 2020, based on priority review.

Honestly ask yourself this; What has changed that is bad for AMRN recently? Answer; Not a damn thing, in fact good things have happened. Nobody said 30 per share or higher would happen overnight you know.. It takes time. They've overcame all the road blocks set in front of them so far ain't they? Look at the year's earning reports/sales. All though out this year both Profit and Sales have only done one thing; climb higher. There is nothing to indicate this will not keep on climbing in 2020 as well. Also, the fat cats ain't selling any, more like they're buying more, cause they know there's more Profit ahead.

Read the OP.

Read "The Intelligent Investor" and "Security Analysis" by Benjamin Graham (Warren Buffett's teacher and mentor at Columbia Business School). He dabs on the follies of the market and the madness of crowds/speculators. Value Investing (the investment strategy he espouses) is very conservative and may seem boring to you but it's solid for long term investing and a great starting place to sober you up so that you don't go and burn your money.

Read "Reminiscences of a Stock Operator" by Edwin Lefevre for a cool account on what it was like to be a stock broker back in the day.

Read a Random Walk Down Wall Street by Burton Gordon Malkiel for a look at how markets fluctuate and how hard it is to beat them.

These alone should get you hooked on stonks.

Stay away from YouTube videos, channels, or courses that promise you that their way is the best way to get you rich. If it isn't completely agnostic and educational as in "a + b = c" stay away.

It still gets the point across that making money is one thing and starry eyed visions of the future are another.

I went to school to study molecular biology so that I can then work in research or biotech/biopharma to find cures for diseases and ailments and do the noble thing. This, however, didn't align with the nagging feeling/voice inside my head that told me I needed to make a lot of money by any means necessary... so I dropped out of school and became an entrepreneur who also trades in the financial markets instead. Let us just say that what I learned in school and in my previously held research position allows me to be able to call a bluff and scream "BULLSHIT!" at press releases and info packets that companies in these spaces put out. All researchers are groomed to fudge the numbers and cook the books, so to speak, so that the data is favorable (in all academic disciplines). Any mechanism that the FDA has in place to prevent such a thing from occurring is minimal and is bypassed with ease. We used to resize/rescale charts and infographs so that they played in our favor whenever we composed grant write-ups and begged for money. There is nothing noble in doing this. I would rather live with a clear conscious by being a ruthless shark capitalist. At least my intentions and motivations are crystal clear.

These are the people who are going to be deciding on how to cover the drug. If they’re not seeing High cash flow from higher prices with rebates? They’re not going to make it easy. They don’t want to start paying out for a wave of new prescriptions, and they may slow down the process and set up roadblocks.

The easy money has been made. The launch is the difficult part. Maybe more excitement will be generated when Canada and the eu make their decisions, but that’s not supposed to be a quick process.

I know it's irritating but there is an important lesson about the market you should learn from this. There are many parties involved in trading a particular stock, the desired price movement differs between them. This will result in large swings on no particular news and for no obvious reason. Strategy must take this in to account so you are rarely truly surprised by price movements. Amarin ran up quite a bit before the news dropped. Profit taking and short sellers have momentarily assumed control. This isn't a case of manipulation.

How viable is it to buy a stock you see potential in, in the long term (potentially VERY long term, like years)?

SGMO looks like it's hitting the floor right now, I really don't see it going much further lower than $8, maybe $7 at most. So, I was thinking of buying half of my position around $8 (with the ability to buy the other half at $7 if it gets there, and maybe finally $6 in the end if needed), and writing calls every month for probably around $9 or $10. If it gets there great, I'd be happy to have my shares called. If not, and it will probably be not, I just keep collecting the free money from the premium while I get to hold the shares for however long it takes them to moon. Which again, could be years.

Is this viable or should I just look for better opportunities elsewhere?

Bite the bullet and buy; with your luck, the market will crash the instant you jump in. Then the rest of us who are waiting will get a chance to buy the dip.

Have a regular investment plan and average in by buying in the short term (1-3 week) dips. This is the really the only way to buy in when you know we're long over due for a recession. However, if you hold during that time, you'll come out with better gains because the majority of investors sell during recessions. It's a huge discount for those who see it as the biggest opportunity of a life time.

>> No.16597204

/smg/ has no idea what they're talking about. This place only learns about the winners once they're at the top and the people who can profit off them are already on the inside to make their sell. Every day some stock no one here knew about is making huge climbs, while the stock being shilled is either dead or dropping.

I have slowly come to the terrible revelation that none of you know what the fuck you are doing. I have a Master's in Accountancy with a minor in Finance. I work for a fortune 100 as a corporate accountant with a CMA and CPA. I used to have some faith in anon. None of you know how to actually value a company. You can't read financial statements. For fuck's sake you think TA works and the entire field of decision science churns out dissertations every other day highlighting their absolute dismay at the fact that brainlets ever consider using it. You have no idea what Dunning-Kruger is. You don't know what survivorship bias is. You are fucked.
