I think you're probably (sadly) right. But on the off chance that Bernie does the nomination (if he doesn't get assassinated) he'll demolish Trump. Imagine Bernie debating health-care with Trump. Or unionizing the work force.
You'd very quickly see the contrast between someone who's worked his entire life for the betterment of the working/middle class and someone who mainly talks about it

canceling student loan debt is low level pandering, nothing more. I'm a millenial who took out student loans to go to college and bought my own home when I was 26....because I borrowed responsibly and payed as much of my was through school as I could so that I wouldn't be burdened by debt I couldn't afford. a college degree isn't hard to pay for if we're being honest. the problem is retards who borrowed as much as they could, cost of living loans, etc. defaulting on payments or whatever to rack up hundreds of thousands in debt. this proposal rewards the most financially irresponsible from out generation and shifts the cost to those who managed their lives and debt responsibly. it's a slap in the face. most people graduate with reasonable amounts of debt....like used car loan levels of debt.

I'm in the same boat. The problem is that wages have stagnated since the 80's (at least) while the qualifications for middle-class work has risen. Sure, some come out on top, but the vast majority does not. Now with the problem diagnosed the question becomes: how do we as a country handle the situation at hand and increase economic output. I believe in a trickle-up approach; imagine the amount of business ideas that were never realized because of the burden of debt our generation as a whole suffers under. Imagine the amount of economic activity that would come from consumers not having to use half their pay check on basic medicine.
There's a concept called the velocity of money and everything I've seen indicates that economic growth is fueled by regular people; they spend more of their income as a percentage than the wealthy.
These things are really obvious if you spend more than a minute thinking about them

>> No.16588744

>>16588698
That's exactly how it works. The government has the power to set tax-rates and distribute those taxes to build the nation. It does NOT however have the ability to force other nations to do so (short of violent threats). Trump's Wall and proposals like M4A or tuition free college are simply not analogous

>> No.16588823

>>16588713
economic output isn't the problem though. we've been living through a record breaking bull market. the economy has been growing.

trickle up approach is fine by me if we're talking about transforming our healthcare system so that it doesn't cost me $600/m for a single plan that I can't afford to even use because the deductibles are too high. it makes sense if we talk about reducing the cost of education for future students. it does not make sense if we start talking about subsidizing everyone in this country who borrowed money to get themselves ahead. that's not trickle up. like I said, it's a proposal that rewards the most financially irresponsible and shifts the burden onto the rest of us.
If you're in your 30's and still struggling with student loan debt, it's because you fucked up and made some bad decisions.

shallow thinking imo. this kind of tax would trigger a great recession as capital mass exits US financial markets for more favorable conditions abroad. whatever retirement account you've saved up in your 401k will crash in value and the purchasing power of the dollar will rapidly decrease. buy hey, you no longer have to make monthly payments on your student loan bill. too bad everything else is more expensive now though and that great job you went to school for doesn't pay any better. this idea of bringing everyone up at any cost is only going to bring the bottom 99% to an equally poor threshold. might seem like an improvement to the poorest of the poor, but the cost is on everyone else who can't really afford it either.

Capital flight is a possibility. But neither you or I can know for certain how much of a long term impact it would have. Markets tend to take these things in stride, as long as it's phased in correctly (see nations whom regularly hike minimum wages based on the CPI for example.
