There is a specific cutoff date where if you own the stock at that date, you will get the divvy and you can sell the next day i.e. cut off date is 2nd, you can buy on the 1st and sell on the 3rd. However stock price is technically supposed to fall by the dividend amount after that date, so such a strategy is supposed to be invalid, but sometimes there might be other market forces that make it plausible.

It really depends on the stock and your purpose of buying it in the first place. If a stock price continues to rise in the days after the cutoff date, what reason could it be? Would it make sense to sell based on that reason? If the opposite happens (the stock falls more than the divvy value), same logic applies. There are good dividend stocks and good non-dividend stocks, those are the ones you should buy. There are also bad versions of both. When I saw good I mean long-term hodling, preferably DCA-ing for retirement kind of stock, which is what everyone should be doing whether you want to gamble with Biomemes or whatever. The benefit of a divvy stock is that it gives you realised gains without having to sell your stock, but a "good" non-divvy stock should be reinvesting its money wisely and gaining more capital appreciation. You would be surprised at how irrational politicians can be in current year.
I used to be more confident saying "that will never happen" about some things, like your post, but now I have to accept that there is always a chance of the deeply absurd. Politicians love finding ways to be irrational about money. Especially for the "save the world" agenda item of the present, which is pretending that certain types of energy use and material consumption are super bad and others are super good (ex. oil+coal bad, solar panels+batteries good).
I don't think Norway is suddenly going to cap their wells because of Thornberg, but if they slowed their pumping as a signal of concession I wouldn't be surprised.

I get it though. A lot of people trade that way and it becomes a self fulfilling prophesy. From my perspective the company looks like trash. The news is trash. The price is destined to drop further based on current performance, future performance, ex div date, 'news'.

I might be wrong, but expect 6 something before a rebound then a continual drop to 2-3. The volumes alone ... like 10x the number selling as buying.

Interesting you should say that as today I've been thinking a lot about my strategy. My goals are to outperform an ETF by making moderate amount of trades with a moderate amount of risk. I intend to buy fairly good stocks which have a limited up and downside.

Instead I've been making a ton of trades on stuff with a ton of risk. I've been trading based on news, hype and trend analysis rather than technical. I've pretty much been doing the opposite of what my goals were.

If I'm going to do better at this ... I need to devote more time to it and be more on it. I don't know if I have that time and if I'd enjoy spending that time.

For me there is a separation between trading on trend, where the asset price is detached from reality for a brief period and trading on technical where you should avoid anything which has detached from actual value. Like trading hype I need to have a lot more 'take profit' orientated mindset rather than hodl these gay bags.

still holding GALT, still have no intention of selling
it's looking like price action won't be too good in the intermediate term, but the science (the reason I bought the stock in the first place) is still unchanged

I might update the pastebins in the OP at some point, they're pretty outdated at this junction

For all you CORV folks. Just want to discuss some things. If you're worried, do not fret. There will always be pressuring questions by the FDA, and they will approach the sentiment as negative as possible. Do you think they would be 100% happy about giving them the approval right away? Otherwise, this wouldn't take an entire day to vote upon its approval.
I believe right now the only concerns are that the selective patients are not deemed "diverse" by some voters that have been contradicting themselves from the data, as they think Europe is too "white", which is fucking hilarious.10 years of successful clinical study in Europe and Canada, and some FDA peeps are concerned about a dog and one patient's death (77 year old boomer, had other factors present like alcohol consumption, rather than the vernakalent drug that caused it).

I'm leaning for almost even vote, with for approval for today's ADCOM. And then FDA will put another CRL on them.

at least a partnership in oncology should be in the making, but if it doesn't happen in the near term, it might take some extra time after data from the p2B phase of the NASH-RX trial comes out to get terms more favorable to the company
given the many issues with the design of the NASH-CX trial, the data they got in that context was very encouraging if you look beyond superficial headlines, and their cancer data is very promising as well
I'm looking forward to seeing the data with a better trial design (4 mg/kg dose, only compensated cirrhotic patients, possibly longer treatment duration)
the company is in a unique position in cirrhotic NASH, and the science supporting the potential of galectin-3 inhibition in cancer and cardiac indications, among others, continues to pile up

This is just my own thoughts on this subject: But consider; AMRN flies ever higher till the FDA decision. Then the dip due to profit taking (understandable). Now here is the perfect window, during that dip, where the Buyout deal strikes. Big Pharma doesn't have to fork out as much Green yet AMRN share holders still end up making a killing. Cause any amount of Green would be based on price of AMRN stock at the time the deal was made. The longer it goes after Dec without a Buyout, the more Green Big Pharma would have to fork out. So better for Big Pharma to strike as soon as FDA made the decision. I'm sure they don't want another Lipotor on there hands; in that case a year after Lipotor was on the market Big Pharma forked out $90 a share for it. If Big Pharma had bagged them right after the FDA decision they would've forked out less. Pretty sure talks are happening now between AMRN and Big Pharma with the deal sealer being whatever the FDA says eoy

GALT's current market cap is 160 million. They have a drug that could be used in NASH, Cancer, and a shitload of other indications.

Piss on it all you like but its a powder keg waiting to blow up. Pic related is their founder and a board member resigning from another board in order to do exactly what he said.

Since he wrote that they've let the share price drop intentionally and then held a rights offering in which Dick Uihlein alone bought 20 million worth at 4.28. He also exercised 5 dollar warrants.

The short swing rule of insiders not being able to profit from insider buys is six months. That rights offering and massive insider buys was six months ago.
