the halving didn't do anything do the price.
What happened is the ico bubble generated new hype for the sector, but the media only talked about 'bitcoin' which is why retail mindlessly piled with their money at the end of 2017

This.

Halvlets think that because BTC went up after its previous halvings, that it was BECAUSE of the halvings.

BTC price moves for a myriad of reasons, most of them opaque and unknowable. The halvings were just one ingredient in a larger soup of factors, and while they certainly played a part in the feedback-loop that led to prior moonings, they weren't necessarily the decisive factor (or even the most important), and there's no guarantee that it's going to all unfold the same way next time.

Bottom line is this: while not every single participant in this market is factoring the upcoming halving in to their buying/selling decisions, the market *on average* knows that the halving is coming and when it's coming. And yet here we are, down over 40% since June, and struggling to break $8K.

So when, exactly, is everybody going to stop selling and start buying to get their "guaranteed" halving gains? And if it was a guarantee, why would anybody be selling at all?

Miners need to sell their btc to pay for operational costs

>So when, exactly, is everybody going to stop selling and start buying to get their "guaranteed" halving gains?
I think you're misreading why the halving is significant - it has little to do with buying pressure. Halving of the block reward does however reduce the selling pressure from miners by a significant amount, meaning that substantially less buying pressure is needed for price to be stable or increase
