All of these retail workers won't see any upward mobility, they'll be given a "neighborhood watch" title as a way to appease their aspirations, but they'll always hire someone rando to take the real supervisor position. They make all of the low pay entry levelers fight it out to get to the top and just ignore them.
I wish I was able to show I had legitimate management experience after four years of customer service, but they just put me in charge of new hires that made more money than me...

I worked my way up in my first job in my career, practically a slave for a subcontractor, to warehouse bitch, then the company actually noticed me and brought me into the office. Then the grind started over and they surprisingly made me a supervisor, and then years later another division of the company offered me a managers position across the country. I took it. After 6 months there, I was headhunted by the massive public company I work for now. Soo many people qualified for my job applied for it internally, and were all shot down. Mind you, I don't have a degree, just 10 years of experience, but still, one of these guys deserved the opportunity more than I did.
