Anyone else hate the American Dream? I feel like I'm increasingly pressured to invest, be in real estate, subscribe to this and that insurance, optimize my contribution to this that or the other fund etc etc in order to stay financially secure. And somehow this is billed as freeing?

If that's your thing, that's cool, I hope you do all the best day trading or real estate or whatevs, but I don't want that to be necessary. I don't give two shits, why does it demand so much of my attention as a member of the working class?

I'm not lazy, I'm OK with doing my best when I'm in training or at work, when it comes to my actual, chosen profession. But don't wanna think about my car, or housing, or markets, or any of that. Just build a bunch of public housing and public transportation, guarantee me a bare minimum retirement standard etc etc, let me work and pay taxes and stop paying attention to all of that and do my own thing with the rest of my time

I'm not a commie and I like other Americans. But I don't want to be expected to do anything more than my best during hours of school or work. Beyond that I should be protected financially without having to do anything. And if folks wanna go above and beyond with their free time they should be rewarded for that.

This makes no sense. If I'm an engineer or an artist, how about just letting me be the best engineer or artist I can. Wtf is the point of also making me responsible for which company is going to offer the right insurance plans and which 401k has the best returns and whether ny housing will be secure through the next decade? All of these activities involving numbers changing hands on paper with a thousand middle men is a sort of economic activity, but it adds little to no material wealth to the economy. I'm not even wild about having to strategize an optimal commute. Just give me a reliable metro with wma wifi connection so I don't have to think about it. Sure, someone needs to be responsible for getting everyone's papers in order to some extent, and that is something basic I should be able to rely on happening without my direct input. And again for folks who wanna go do it themselves that's fine and if they do it better they should be rewarded, but it shouldn't be a necessity for me to worry about the value of real estate if I want my finances to be secure through the next recession or something.

This overly convoluted system is couched in all manner of patriotism but I suspect is just a way to entrench the well connected with an element of plausible deniability.
