Many systems were made quickly, a long time ago, without considerations for scaling or reusing code as more features are requested. Sometimes due to incompetency, or short deadlines, or some other reason.

This creates massive, ugly codebases. So we, the code jannies, have to clean up (but not for free). It's some of the saddest wagecucking possible.

For example, my recent janny work is fixing an application that makes too many calls to a database. It's an old application that was made in the late 2000s, that provides obscure data about products my company sells. It wasn't too much before, so there weren't many problems caused by bad design.

But now new teams have created other applications that call it as a service, there are about 50k requests per 10 minutes, many of them have multiple products they are requesting for, sometimes 10, 20 etc in a single api call. The application individually makes a DB call for every single product. The infrastructure team is saying we need to fix this or buy more cloud storage.

So my current janny work is changing the application so all the services, 10-15 that query this DB, will use batch sql query instead of individual ones. It should hopefully reduce the DB queries. Unfortunately the batch queries require a lot of business logic change too, since the business logic was previously applied to each product individually. So the initial bad design is causing a lot more work to fix, so that it is actually scalable.

The match checks if the function is globally scoped or if it is a method. Then returns a signature, which will probably be compiled into an op code, and then asm or is interpreted at runtime. The lifetimes are needed because the compiler needs to do a precompile check to have deterministic assurance that the type referenced in the returned struct will live *as long as* the returned struct.
