Buy a passive stock ETF with a low expense ration or a VERY diversified stock portfolio. If you want less risk (and lower average return) put some % into government bonds.
If you know what you're doing you can consider real estate too. The downsides of real estate are
> a lot higher transaction fees than stocks/ bonds
> a lot less liquidity than stocks/ bonds (= you have to wait to buy/sell and/ or pay a premium)
> management can be a pain in the ass
> if you don't know what you're doing then the return might be miserable after taxes, expenses etc.
The main advantages of real estate are:
> easy to leverage (mortgage)
> low taxes on returns in some countries
> more predictable passive income (at least until you get JUSTed by a housing bubble and/ or you can't find a tenant).

Truly passive income would come from dividend stocks IMO. However dont play with super risky ones because they dump hard as fuck

depends how much risk you are willing to take. i'll start from more riskier to least riskiest.

a crypto with staking mechanism.

crypto "stable" coin with staking

less riskier than crypto you can buy a fund or etf that's geared towards "dividend income" that invests in large cap blue chip companies paying a decent divident. between 4-7% is realistic
second to least riskiest. and if you're in the high tax bracket you also pay state income taxes, you can do a laddered bond portfolio of municipal bonds of that specific state. if you don't pay state income taxes you can by a structure a laddered municipal bond portfolio.
i do this all the time for clients. I'm series 7 and 66 licensed and currently going for my CFP

by US treasuries. i'm recommending TIPs (treasury - inflated - protected securities.) or treasuries notes or treasury bonds no longer than 10 years out unless your seeking pure income for retirement.

by the way there reason why i recommend municipal bonds for people in a high tax bracket because all that income is tripple tax free.

to get a taxable equivalent return on a municipal bond paying 3%... you're i taxable investment would need to yield nearly 5 or 6% in come if youre in the highest tax bracket.

this is a no-brainer. to go with the less riskier option.
