I am 18 and have no fucking clue what I want to do. Tried going to community college but I seriously hate it, just want to start working. Anyone have experience learning to be an electrician as a trade? Would you recommend it? Thanks nigga.

You should definitely ask /diy/. This topic is more their ground and it’s actually a decent board.

Little zoom zoom listen here from a wise 25 yo who actually went to trades because of advice here when I was your age

See if electrical power distribution is available and if not do hvac

I'm better off than 99% of people my age and was able to invest in ETH sub $50 due to great income

>> No.16223050

Do it. Fuck debt and college. I have no debt. I'm not blue collar either. Just went into sales and cleared 6 figs because that's how sales works

>exact same position as OP
>dropped out of Uni
>started learning "based trade" electrician
>sucks ass, extreme long days (starting at 7am- work till 6-7 pm UNPAID internship)
>in winter, unfinished houses, no heating, cold as fuck

Learned it for 1 year, worked (paid) for 4 months untill I ragequit. I was working on a roof of a restaurant, accidently hit an asbestos pole who fell down and killed the solar panels and health inspections had to close down the restaurant for public safety hazard ( asbestos all over the restaurant and living room of the owners) so a specialised company had to fix it

Fuck working. Honestly felt like killing myself everyday, felt like an unrespected peasant doing the shitty jobs for next to nothing. Nobody gives a fuck if you work 40-50 hours a week but if you ask to stop earlier for 1 day for an appointment it's suddenly a huge problem. NEET'ing for year now since, haven't been happier

generally you should be able to find a company that will help if not pay for an apprenticeship school for becoming an electrician, helps to live in a big shit city though
probably the same for plumbing
>>-master electrician reporting in

Working is slavery. There aren't any good jobs without 8+ years of schooling, even then they're extremely competitive. Just be a NEET. If you can't be a NEET try to get a night time security job

Yes
But a month long training for a comfy, albeit low-medium pay job isn't bad.

Yeah. The idiot couldn't even make it over a semester of community college. Do you think he will even have the will to study enough to pass the electrician certification exam?

This. Don't underestimate it. I thought 'electrician' was just a notch above painting, maybe a bit of thinking but mostly focussed on working with your hands.

Turned out it's alot harder than it looks. There isn't time/ room for errors and everything has to be done FAST. There is no time for slacking at ALL. When I was a technician installing alarm/CCTV systems etc I mostly had 1 day to completely install, wire & configure a whole system. With a nice business or old (cement) house, you really have to think thorougly how to set up and where you can most efficiently put the wires and how to do the cabling. There's fuckloads of ways to fuck up and the only way to be a good tradesman is to do it for thousands and thousands of hours ( +5 years plus experience). More often than not I had no time to eat at all.

Only plus side is you're not surrounded by liberal pussies or faggots.
Don't do it, unless you were already interested in electrity from the start or know people who want to learn it to you

Being a laborer isn’t even bad. It can suck at times, but you’ll eventually leave that job to go elsewhere. I was a laborer and the worst thing I ever had to do was be a mason tender. Made me hate masons. All they do is bitch and moan. I was blessed though and usually got put on some really cool jobs. First one was at a GM plant for a paint factory. Most recent job was a tunneling job. Wish I would have stayed with them, but I fucked up and became a drug addict

I am in Chicago and make 24/hour as a second year union apprentice. I will be making $28/hour in a couple months as a third year. Journeyman rate is currently $50/hour, but you also get health insurance, and 2 pensions on top of that.
It's pretty based desu. downside is all pipetrades require a 5 year apprenticeship to become a journeyman.

>> No.16223370

>>16223301
Yeah, but every year you get a raise that scales with the journeyman rate. for example your last year as an apprentice you could be making 80% of $50/hr, so you're making around 80k/year if you worked 2000 hours. More if you want to be an overtime whore.

No experience as a sparky but I have colourful background, so figured I'd share. I was a university drop out, I've worked bars/ restaurants.. Worked in retail, worked in many different office positions from sales to legal, worked offshore on oil rigs - night shifts in the North Sea - and in IT. Now I'm 28, I've decided to go back to university and get all the knowledge I can about IT and become a developer. Because I actually fucking like it.
My advice to you anon? Do as much as you can, to see what you like.

Yes, would recommend. if you want to be rich as a tradie, just follow these steps

Become the best at what you do (figuratively)
Do it for yourself (self employed)
Hire extra help
Hire more help
Stop working in the field and just manage people
Expand
Retire

Start an apprenticeship as an Instrument Tech or go to school for Instrumentation engineering. Most of the jobs are industrial Oil&Gas/Petrochemical plants though. HVAC is better.
