Lots of potential buys. DF hits the prophesied $0.95 buy zone. SNSS is down to $0.50. What do you think about SNSS today? It seems like it has room to double over the coming weeks, and SNSS Anon has had such rotten luck with his other stocks he's postex about here, simple probability tells us he's due for a big win. On the other hand, Baggie's interest is definitely a possible bear signal. Still. it might be worth buying 500 or 1,000 shares.

What does everyone think about LCI earnings. I checked this morning and it looked like it was rising in anticipation. I bet reported earnings will be in line with expectations. Will there be any sell off afterwards? Or will shorts get further BTFO and see a double-digit percentage surge?

Didn't mean to reply to you in that last post. I'm not margined at all. I'm guessing that they figure the costs of shutting down margin entirely is greater than what they expect to lose off of people exploiting their margin rules. It does seem like a problem that they are letting people with $2,000 cash use $1,000,000 worth of margin, so maybe it will bite them. I'm planning to move off RH anyway for Schwab. I have $2 calls on all my shares so I'll be cashed out of ODP within 2 weeks. Then I'll just have TLRD on there.

Robinhood's margin requirements don't work for good stocks like SNSS. RH will just say they're "high volatility" stocks. You'll close the day well over the maintenance requirements and then all of a sudden at midnight they'll lock your account for no stated reason, only to send out an email hours later for a $15 margin call (even though your account still says your margin health is "good"). This happened to me when trying to make money off margined shares of ODP. The margin is only worthwhile on boring stocks.

/smg/ is a very diverse place full of all kinds of different people. We all have different ideas and unique ways to lose money ;^)

some times you want to buy a stock just to try and sell it for a set gain in the short term (in this case, your profit target won't always be a set number like 10%, it should be based on historical and projected volatility).
Other stocks, you buy and hold because you know the company will keep doing well indefinitely. There are more strategies besides.
Each person's own investment/trading strategies should be based on their individual goals, resources, and risk tolerances.

Usual suspects. UPRO for a 3x S&P, SSO for 2x S&P when I'm feeling bearish. TQQQ 3x Nasdaq. When I had a small account and I wanted to day trade, I would buy one of the bull ETFs when it dipped then sell it's opposite if it shot back up in the same day.
For example if UPRO dips down and I buy then it shoots back up I then buy SPXS which is a 3x bear S&P ETF. I would do that instead of just selling UPRO so I wouldn't use up one of my day trades yet I'd still be flat. Then the next morning you sell both positions to get all your money back. Adjust accordingly if the market is really moving hard.

Here's the rundown. I don't trade individual stocks, only index ETFs. In short it's cuz stocks can go to zero, conversely if an index ETF like SPY should go to zero you have bigger worries like food and ammunition. So we start with index ETFs for our strategy. Problem? Yes, index ETFs move too slowly. Solution? Leverage. Problem with leverage? If the underlying moves against you, your account can end up at zero, also there is only so much leverage you can get in stocks. So how do we get enough leverage with our index ETFs without losing everything? Well, there are other ETFs that use the S&P as the underlying that have built-in leverage at 3x which is plenty to make big money. So how do you keep from going broke if the S&P moves down more than 33 and a third percent causing the leveraged ETF to get margin called? Easy, the leveraged ETFs are rebalanced daily so each morning you start fresh at exactly 3x meaning the S&P has to move down 34% in a single day. So what then? Not gonna happen thanks to circuit breakers. What about "decay" from the daily rebalancing? Massively overblown non-issue for index ETFs. Also we're trading here not hodling like cryptards. The daily rebalance is the sauce that makes it work. With regular leverage, if you go long and the price drops your effective steadily increases until it hits infinity which is a margin call. Or the price rises and your leverage effectively decreases and you don't make as much. Daily balancing solves both issues. Good luck.

Yep, I've been refining my system for a while and it's pretty robust. Of course a gap down more than 33 and 1/3 percent in the same day would make the stop worthless but, I mean, what the hell would it take to precipitate that? Frackin armageddon or something. I also trade crypto and futures too so all my eggs aren't in the same basket. I even use different stock brokers for different strategies. One might even go so far as only buy half UPRO and half SPXL just in case one of them survived an extreme Black Swan somehow. Worth thinking about.

Partly but not entirely. Here, let me explain the bare bones part of my strat:
>ichimoku cloud: hide everything except the kijun line and kenkan line (default settings). These lines are called the base line and conversion line in tradingview
>Kenkan crossing above kijun is a buy signal, if and only if: price never crossed below kijun on that day and closed above the kenkan. This is signal for potential buy the following day.
>if price is trading below the kenkan on buy day, don't buy. If it crosses below the kijun, double extra don't fugging touch it
>kijun must not be angled downwards when you buy, must be flat or preferably angled up

Use additional widgets to confirm or invalidate buy signal. Use a different (faster) widget for exit signals. One of the most important shit checks is a volume based indicator to tell you whether the majority of the volume is buy side or sell side at the time.

Now, if you bring this stuff up and check McRonals chan, you will see that I bought in way the fuck below all these lines. Why? Because I like to gamble sometimes and I got a good feel.

according to the latest fool article AMRN stock is expected to jump around 30% after they kick the FDA's ass. Further gains won't happen till 2020 gets moving along or the Holy Buyout kicks off. Which fits into my own personal theory that the Holy buyout deal will happen between the 15th and 27th of this year. It'll be sometime in 2020 before the deal is finally done and stockholders get there fat baggies. So 30% jump would be hitting the 30 per mark. Past 30 to 50 your looking into 2020 before that happens. The Holy buyout would see you get $60 per share (30 x 2)

My perspective is different from most. I don't think, so I trust this company? Or do I like natural gas this winter? Or really any of that. I look for assets to buy that in my opinion are likely to follow certain patterns. Do I believe that in the long term the price will be higher than it is today? Is there likely to be tradable volatility in the short and medium term? Is it extremely unlikely to go to zero? If it is a leveraged product, what is the likelihood of a complete loss of principle? And so on like that. I don't care what the underlying is, whether it is a company, a derivative, a commodity, digital collectible, currency or anything else. I only care what pattern it follows. If I like what I see, I buy. And for what it's worth there are no individual companies that meet my requirements so I don't invest there.

I base my entries on support and resistance like most traders and I go into a trade with a well defined thesis. My exit comes when the price action concludes the thesis. I might buy at or below previous support and sell at the next highest previous support if the asset is on a big dip. I basically buy high and sell higher. The edge comes by shrewdly spotting those areas of support. I don't actually use leverage with ETFs other than what's built in to the instrument itself. That is, I don't use margin there. When I want leverage trading indexes or commodities I use futures and the cheapest futures broker I've found is Amp Clearing. You can open a $15,000 contract on the S&P micro with only $40 so do the math on that. Round trip trade is only a few dollars too. The numbers come out to about 1/100 what it costs to trade in e.g. crypto assuming a 0.2% fee both ways. Taxes are much better for futures too.

Correct and yes. I only stay in until profit take point is hit, exit widget says sell, or I get stopped out. The point being to reduce my exposure to drawdown and free up cash for the next trade instead of waiting things out.

Speaking of Nintendo, none of this TA stuff would have helped for the most recent volatility. It was saying bearish to neutral right up until that monster move on earnings beat. It could have been chased by buying the gap up that morning but that kind of entry is low percentage. Wait till following day to buy, okay, then maybe make 3%-ish when selling the following red? A win but not great and high risk on top. Now if you were already in for fundamental reasons you would have rode the whole move. Oh sweet! Muh Canadian choo choo train stock CNR got some good news after close today. Apparently they moved a record volume of grain. I don't pretend to understand the fundies involved with rail freight but this certainly sounds good and the stock is also in very nice short term bullish trend.

>Western Canadian grain movements totaled 2.8 million metric tonnes (mt) of grain and processed grain products in October, beating a previous record of 2.7 million mt in April 2019.
>The record comes as cold and wet weather at the start of the 2019-2020 harvest season curtailed grain shipments for both Canadian National (CN) and Canadian Pacific (NYSE: CP). The adverse weather conditions "negatively affected the pace of grain deliveries, leaving rail capacity significantly under-utilized," CN said. Nonetheless, CN has moved over 6.7 million mt since the start of the Canadian harvest season Aug. 1.

taxes and other inefficiencies

if you buy and hold stocks for >1 year, your capital gains are all taxed with long-term rates at the end. you have to buy/sell against the spread twice, ever.
If you are selling calls, collecting premium, and buying the stocks back if they get called away, you have a lot more going on. You have to be trying to maximize your efficiencies on collecting the premium. you end up fighting the spread a lot more often. And because you're buying/selling more often, you are going to probably be paying taxes on most of your gains every year, which chips into your compounding now, instead of putting off paying the taxes until the end of your compounding.

If you end up doing a lot of work and under-performing PBP on a long term, tax adjusted basis, you can always throw in the towel, buy PBP, and achieve the same strategy (as long as your strategy is a simple, monthly at-the-money call write)

Look up the wheel strategy. Sounds like it might be a good fit for you. You're gonna make it.

Another thing to consider is your personal tax rate. If your gains are being taxed at 12%, that's less of a concern than if your gains are taxed at a higher rate like 24% or 37%.

>SNSS

Someone redpill me on SNSS. Seems like another shitty pharma company whose lost most of its value over the past 5 year. Is there a fundamental reason why it should pump back up?

my ETF plan for the remainder of the year:

making a profit on the periphery of the Aramco IPO:
KSA
XLE
XOP

Holiday Sales:

XLY
XLP
RTH
IBUY
DTEC
IYT

(obviously I expect holiday sales to be robust)

selling off most broad indexes to focus on these events, keeping some GLTR, AWTAX, and bonds.

opinions?
