He shorted with leverage. He borrowed bitcoins from binance, setting his own bitcoin up as security. He then immediately sold those borrowed bitcoins, betting on the price to go down, so he could buy back the bitcoins at a lower price, and pay back his loan to binance. Cashing in the difference.

In this case, he got liquidated because the price rose too fast, and he had to pay back the loaned bitcoins and cover the loss with his own bitcoins.
