>move to new city and join startup
>job turns out to be a little different to what I'd expected but get on with it, try to turn it into more
>company does extremely well, soon it's raking in the cash and expanding rapidly
>I keep doing the same job
>get put under a manager who gets fired
>when review time comes around, next manager fucks me over, get no yearly raise or bonus
>put on new team, manager is shit and gets fired after 7 months along with another team member, and then another leaves
>still essentially doing the same job, hasn't changed
>my ex-bosses boss is now also leaving
>now no clue what will happen
>been just over 2 years since I joined

What do /biz/

Not really much point in leaving before year end now, but I have no idea if I'm getting cucked for a bonus again this year because my boss and the guy above him are both out the door

Never expect a promotion from a job unless you're in a training program like investment banks do for their analysts or F500s for management.

You should switch jobs every 1-2 years depending on the companies reputation and your career goals.

This. Companies will never invest in your unless youre your bosses gold buddy, or blowing him. Quitting is the only way to get promoted.

The amount of fraud and greed that goes on even in publicly traded companies is sickening

Look for another job that will pay you more. You should be switching companies around every 3-5 years.

This is pretty much how it is. Unless it's a lowly job like a restaurant or something, I've practically never actually seen someone be promoted. It is extremely rare. Companies just hire from outside constantly.

Unfortunately OP, if you can't ever get promoted there are two options. Apply elsewhere to get paid more, or do your job really half assed to enjoy your time

It makes you wonder how the fuck those guys got promoted

>> No.16012289

>>16009404
In my experience, promotions from within are rare. A former boss told one reason was that if I'm doing a good job in my current position, they don't want to risk moving me and getting someone who will do a bad job. It's catch 22, you need to do a good job to get a promotion, but if you do a good job they won't want to move you. So the only real way to get money and promotions now is to job hop. It's a sad state of affairs that can only hurt companies and employees.

>> No.16012366

>>16012285

Really the only people I've actually see get promoted are those who get promoted from entry level to just barely above entry level. People who start out between $12 and $15 an hour, and then they get promoted to a job between $15 and $20 an hour and then just stay there indefinitely.

It's so demoralizing. I don't know why companies do this. Once I realize my chances of promotion are slim I simply stop trying very hard and end up quitting or getting fired.

It seems to be like this at all levels. I work shitty jobs because I got a liberal arts degree, but even my friends in computer science making close to 6 figures have the same problem. They get stuck in a job for a few years and have to move jobs in order to make more money

>> No.16012442

I work 6 years at my current job as chemical engineer, pay increased 30% over the this time period. Still felt i was bit under payed so applied for a job elsewhere. Was interviewed and they wanted to hire me for 30% more salary.

So i Went back to my current boss and he said I will give you the 30% right away. I accepted because this job now has much better bonus system and the job itself is much nicer. Such a weird feeling to still do everything 100% the same but suddenly saving much more money. In fact im offshore now:

- 4 hours over time per day
- 2.4 hours 'away from home bonus'

On Saturday 150% and sunday 200% pay. Tfw I make 26.4 hours of pay on sunday with my new salary.
