Because it's exhoribtantly expensive. The "few hundred bucks" you pay annually would be one month's payment for most Americans, and they would have to pay a deductible of $10k or more before insurance covers anything - and they likely won't cover everything, meaning that $100.000 CHF surguery (that probably cost 200k US or more) is very marginally covered, to where at least $50,000 is still going to be owed, if not the whole sum because the insurer says your surgery wasn't as vital as you claim.

To anyone thinking this is not a good idea: you're wrong. So long as you can get a good doctor, this is a very, very good idea. If I ever required something serious done--say a brain operation, or something like that--I would get it done in India.

Why? Because I know people in India, for starters, who could suggest a good surgeon. Visited this guy there, a family friend of my best friend, and he had a non-cancerous tumour in his brain. He waited about two weeks, had the thing out, and is functioning perfectly with full articulation and everything. I'm telling you, his scar was incredibly clean and tight from what I could see.

Cost him about $2000 USD. That's it. For brain surgery. Why? Because they don't give two fucks about ethics etc. in India (this sounds bad, but really it just comes down to 'no touching/pinching the patient.')

because I never inherited anything.

I did however buy a small business and then two years later have a kid born extremely premature the same year my business went over a million in annual sales, at which point I owed the hospital over a million dollars since insurance doesn't cover preemies and I made too much money for Medicaid.

Then I did declare bankruptcy writing off over half a million dollars in medical debt while keeping my business and all its equipment (tools of the trade are exempt). A business that was worth more than a million dollars by one accounting method, though that wasn't the method I went into court with.

Tough breaks, but the whole thing is on you. You either selected really shitty insurance or you selected a hospital with a NICU outside your plan. Either way, that was extremely poor financial planning on your part, and inexcusable because you had months to get it sorted correctly.

You can blame the system all you want, but all I see is a dumb individual who made poor decisions. Fortunately for you, the system even has a safety net to allow you to recover from your mistakes.

the GOP has alienated every demographic except straight white Christian males over the age of 40 with no college education and perhaps a few of their wives.

this bloc is the core of the republican party, they number approximately 1/3 of the electorate.

the only reason they hold any offices at all is because Democrats don't vote. They really don't vote during off years between presidential elections. If Democrats and those leaning Dem voted as often as Republicans do we wouldn't have a Republican party anymore.

>Thinks lack of competition is why the insurance market is fucked in America
Welcome back from the Trump rally faggot.

The market is failing because in order to "work", like all insurance, it needs a bunch of people to pay a little bit for something they don't need in order to afford to pay for what a few people do need. But since a central part of the law is banning exclusions for preexisting conditions and the mandate that it must be "affordable" (via subsidies) to even the extremely poor means that you have a lot of very sick people jumping on the bandwagon, which inflates the price and makes healthy people who don't want to pay for that jump off, which drives the price up more.

Competition won't fix that. That's why you see insurers pulling out of the markets all over the country. It's not that the margins are too low, it's that they straight up can't run losses like they have sustained there and stay in business. Remember: The prices are dictated by the government mandate, not the free market, so it doesn't even matter how many companies "compete" with each other. They have to offer at least X product for at most Y price. There's not much space left to compete on.

It's all going to collapse on itself in a year or two and we'll definitely get single payer healthcare and all that it entails just like Europe, because that's the only thing that's politically palatable. People want "free" stuff, even if they have to pay for it in taxes (because you can always vote for someone else to pay for it) and they'll accept a suppressed standard of quality or rationing as a compromise to get it.

>the ACA fixed the problem by requiring insurance companies to cover preemie babbies and to cover people with pre-existing conditions

The fact ACA requires insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions means health insurance is no longer insurance. Unless you're employed by an organization that covers at least 75% of your monthlies, there's literally no reason to pay into the system because you can wait until you get sick/injured/have an emergency, buy a plan, and they can't reject your claims. So what we have are a bunch of expensive sick people paying for a bunch of other expensive sick people. This is exactly what everyone said would happen and it's exactly what is happening.

And even if you're not paying into Obamacare, you have to pay for all the ingrates on medicaid who basically use the emergency room as a "free" way to get out of their crack dens. It's the dumbest system in existence.

>If you don't pay into it, you'll be "taxed" (ie penalized) around $2000

1) The penalty is actually $700, not anywhere close to $2,000

2) The IRS currently is not enforcing the penalty against non payers (they say you have to pay, but if you don't, they don't audit you like in other evasion.) Obamacare is such a cluster fuck that enforcing the fee would be like making the bottom 10% of the US population pay for something they can't afford in the first place.

3) For the average 20 year old, it's pretty easy to decide between paying $4,000 a year for insurance (deductibles) that you will never use or face a $700 penalty you will never have to pay.

And thinking that "paying into it now" will reward you later is delusional.

Obamacare will NOT be in existence in 20 years. It's not sustainable. Kids paying into it now will not see any benefit when it's their time to be old and sick.

I met the guy in charge of that study. His point of view is that, *despite* the US spending more on cancer treatment, the benefits are marginal and probably not worth it.

Also, relative prostate cancer survival rates will fall in the coming years since the recommendation against using PSA tests to screen. We were catching and needlessly treating a lot of cancers that would've had no effect before the patient died of other causes.
