I'm canadian but a few years ago I was living in Switzerland and I had to get a very expensive emergency surgery done after an accident (came out at roughly 100 000CHF which is around 140k$CAD) and I didn't pay s ingle cent for the whole procedure, thanks to my few hundred bucks a year private insurance

They are flawed, I agree. No drug is perfect and its definitely not for everyone. But when I'm unable to read a page in a book without zoning out or do other simple menial tasks without some small outside stimuli wrecking my train of thought there's something wrong.

Its not even just school that its improved, its helped me at work as well. I actually get work done without zoning out, actually plan out tasks, follow thorough with them.

I did however buy a small business and then two years later have a kid born extremely premature the same year my business went over a million in annual sales, at which point I owed the hospital over a million dollars since insurance doesn't cover preemies and I made too much money for Medicaid.

Then I did declare bankruptcy writing off over half a million dollars in medical debt while keeping my business and all its equipment (tools of the trade are exempt). A business that was worth more than a million dollars by one accounting method, though that wasn't the method I went into court with.

The market is failing because in order to "work", like all insurance, it needs a bunch of people to pay a little bit for something they don't need in order to afford to pay for what a few people do need. But since a central part of the law is banning exclusions for preexisting conditions and the mandate that it must be "affordable" (via subsidies) to even the extremely poor means that you have a lot of very sick people jumping on the bandwagon, which inflates the price and makes healthy people who don't want to pay for that jump off, which drives the price up more.

Competition won't fix that. That's why you see insurers pulling out of the markets all over the country. It's not that the margins are too low, it's that they straight up can't run losses like they have sustained there and stay in business. Remember: The prices are dictated by the government mandate, not the free market, so it doesn't even matter how many companies "compete" with each other. They have to offer at least X product for at most Y price. There's not much space left to compete on.

It's all going to collapse on itself in a year or two and we'll definitely get single payer healthcare and all that it entails just like Europe, because that's the only thing that's politically palatable. The fact ACA requires insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions means health insurance is no longer insurance. Unless you're employed by an organization that covers at least 75% of your monthlies, there's literally no reason to pay into the system because you can wait until you get sick/injured/have an emergency, buy a plan, and they can't reject your claims. So what we have are a bunch of expensive sick people paying for a bunch of other expensive sick people. This is exactly what everyone said would happen and it's exactly what is happening.

And even if you're not paying into Obamacare, you have to pay for all the ingrates on medicaid who basically use the emergency room as a "free" way to get out of their crack dens. It's the dumbest system in existence.

2) The IRS currently is not enforcing the penalty against non payers (they say you have to pay, but if you don't, they don't audit you like in other evasion.) yeah everyone is best off actually not paying for health insurance, instead of paying that $320 a month you should just keep that and use it whenever you pay for care. i advocate for the free market solution of letting hospitals compete as tech companies do and removing restrictions/barriers to the market by removing all subsidies and regulation
