It was, but Christianity is left-wing compared to the old pagan systems of Europe. Even if you ignore or reinterpret the proto-commie stuff from the New Testament, there's still universal morality, subservience and selflessness. The old pagan systems (what the anti-Christian right sees as "radical traditionalism" or just "traditionalism) venerated strength, warfare, social Darwinism, and competition in all facets of life. Christianity has always had impulses against those.

When you analyze modern liberalism/progressivism, the underpinnings are Christian and specifically Protestant in origin. Humanism, human rights, and individual dignity are Christian positions that were developed during the Enlightenment and kept by liberals as definitive, even after they had become secular and dropped all religion. Puritan progressives of their day were basically modern liberals minus the degeneracy.

There's no denying that most Churches from the dark ages up until very recently were much further "right" than what exists today, but going to church and praying for peace and trying to "love" God is miles away from any right-wing society's primary goals. And many "traditional" developments like marital controls and collective identities are arguably left wing arrangements and not right wing ones.
