Been saving everything I can for the last year or so, no unnecessary purchases no eating out. Saved around $3k and just started investing in crypto. 3600 euros a month, just got a raise.

Living in Finland, save 1200 euros per month comfortably due to cheap-ish housing. Master's degree from a top Finnish university.

Live is comfortable and nothing bad will ever happen to me there, but Helsinki weather is atrocious, Finns are complete autists and it is impossible to become rich by simply working. I know a CEO getting 10 000 euros per month sharp, and having taxes take half is ehhhh not worth the headache

I've still got $500 or so for emergencies, but why would I just keep sitting on 3k that's doing nothing for me? Keep in mind I have no bank and cannot make traditional investments be cause of this, besides maybe precious metals, but those, while safe investments, are long term relatively low return. I've got nothing to lose. My life is seriously shit, in the last 10 years I've lived in a tent down by the river for 2 and out if motels and shit for another 2. I cant get any decent paying jobs or financial assistance for school. The menial jobs I do get make me miserable. I'm a fairly high IQ person (I a 35 on my ACT in high school, one point from perfect) and cant do it anymore. This is the only way I can see to break out.

The top firms in the prop market making space, like citadel, optiver, jump, jane street, virtue, hudson river, susquehanna (in no order) all pay 300k or so minimum all-in comp first year. Usually 150-200 base salary with a 50-150 discretionary bonus and anywhere from 25-100 signing. The firms hire almost exclusively from their internal internships (for the most part, this is truer for some on the list and less for others) which are extremely competitive. Most of these firms don't really recruit outside of MIT/Caltech/Stanford/Uchicago + ivies (not even all of the ivies really) so its pretty hard to hear of them unless you do a lot of work yourself. They have big presence on mit/harvard campus and less so basically everywhere else. I got in from a "non target" school after spending a lot of time preparing for interviews. I was a math major who finished most of my degree by the time I was 18 so I had space to take the sort of advanced stats that they wanted and study a lot for interviews/trading. I was also pretty involved in crypto (in a noob sense, I bought a lot of eth in 2017 and had some simple python programs that would show me arbs between different exchanges which I'd then do by hand and later some projects that made basic markets in more illiquid coins like 0x and shit where people would just go and mindlessly take the best offer whenever they saw a post on biz telling them to buy, and then I could easily make 2% over fair in wide ass markets. All of this was big talking points in my interviews

Not everyone will make it, but everyone with a brain will do quite well. My path has been a mix of skill and opportunity.

Engineering attracts loads of nerdy socially awkward weirdos, most of them not even that sharp, so they have literally nothing going for them. In that context, considering I do reasonably well with clients (who are 2 steps above god in the consultancy hierarchy) and have sufficient engineering skills to get the job done, sets me apart from the herd.

I am now the only foreigner in the executive team and second youngest.

It's very hard but I think its because its non-traditional. it's hard to be an investment banker for completely different reasons, for example. You don't have to be a prim WASP from an ivy to work as a prop trader; you have to be smart, good at math, and have a blood scent for how to make money in any situation. I know plenty of my coworkers who got in through being crypto MM with their own money in early days, pro poker players, math olympians, etc. Some people just have super interesting life experiences or worked in specific industries so long (mostly commodity related things) that now they can just crush any market in their chosen product (think oil guys) and the firm loves them for that.

I work around 50. You're expected to be in during market hours absolutely, which is 6.5 hours a day, and then beyond that its up to you to choose how much you want to work. Most compensation comes from bonus, so, work harder and do more = get fatter check

Also work consists of a lot of reading and model building. I research trades I want to do and try to improve how our MM algos respond to market events/ try to avoid having them run over by informed people who might learn news 0.1s faster than us, that sort of thing.

The opinion is that we love them because they give us money.

There's just no reason to ever think you could be successful alone. I couldn't do it; maybe there are a couple of people at the firm who could be profitable by themselves (if given a lot of infrastructure investment up front) because they are either so ungodly good or only trade a single product, but everyone else here would be SOL if they had to do it alone.

It's just a matter of looking at it from the outside view: where do you think the money would come from? Do you think you can react faster to news? Provide liquidity more efficiently to customers? Predict the economy/rainfall/geopolitical events/corporate actions better than us? It seems pretty hopeless for any individual to do it. It's no secret that news reaches HFTs faster than it even reaches the bloomberg terminal, and it reaches bloomberg often an entire minute before its available anywhere on the web.

Prediction seems hopeless too; even we aren't good at it. Nobody is really capable of predicting earnings beats/drops any better than the market's aggregate; you can see famous stats experiments showing this.

There might be some edge left in volatility mispricings around earnings but every single firm has a minimum of 5 people who look at this for like every symbol in the US.

Options are too complicated for any one person to trade; not only do they require a phd level of math knowledge but they are some of the most speed sensitive instruments (to calculate and trade) to the point where HFTs hire hardware engineers whose only job is to work on options trading hardware systems.

Currencies are unbeatable because they are about ridiculously small market microstructure based edges that reward the most informed and connected traders, plus some edge for the ones who can trade in NYC based on data published in LDN fastest (and similar things). Not a whole lot for individuals there

Futures can mean a lot of things. Index futures are absolutely hopeless; even pros basically think there's no edge here, and you can make money providing liquidity only if you're able to do something a significant amount of the other MM can't. Commodity futures have a lot of trades to be done, but insider knowledge of the industry is pretty important, and its easy to get fucked trading something you think you understand but actually a train broke down in texas three minutes ago and everyone you're trading against knows it and you don't so you lose 200 basis points to them

Crypto daytrading is dead too; the HFTs have insane infrastructure compared to the individual market, and fees are so ungodly high unless you're at the very top of the volume discount table that it's completely unrealistic to try to make markets as an individual. The edge left in crypto is probably buy-and-hold (maybe. But I believe it, so I have passive investment in big coins) or literal insider trading on shitcoins that you know are gonna pump

It's tough out there man. I definitely don't recommend trying to make supplementary income trading anything. It's a more sophisticated way to gamble; you're almost certainly -EV, as I would be or virtually anyone

I'm 22. I started working here when I was 20. I graduated a non HYP ivy when I was 20 for math and statistics. My job title is "Quantitative Trader" which is essentially the title of 70% of my firm. Not a lot of title distinction.

If you're into software, look at Hudson River Trading, Jump, and Jane Street. HRT is a pure algo MM so very computer focused. Jump is a little more discretionary/versatile but elite and still tons of cutting edge tech. JS more discretionary and even more versatile but known for using OCaml for everything and have extraordinary software engineers.
