30 min seems to be the natural maximum people are willing to commute one way, this same value actually comes up regardless of time, location or culture. And historically pedestrian based cities layouts match this till recent changes.

Yet when testing compared other offers of higher wages with longer commutes strong majority consistently picked more money, even when cost of transport exceeded the higher pay earnings.

I blame how we have put too much value in money and corrosive car culture. If we didn't value money too much people wouldn't tolerate such long commutes. And even if we thought money was the answer to everything, the lack of alternative options (namely Cars) would not make it impractical to make such long routes, which largely contributes to the problem.
