Without Litecoin, there's no viable scrypt based replacement. Without a scrypt alternative, the entire crypto market suffers from elevated intrinsic risks due to the lack of a viable alternative. Should a critical fault ever be discovered within the sha256 protocol, scrypt coins would inherit the mantle.

Litecoin is actually necessary for the success of Bitcoin.
