I don't think there is a blanket strategy you could use to consistently outperform "the market". For example, if you're buying puts as a hedge, how expensive do you think it would to buy puts to hedge the entire time you're in the market over a period of decades? I feel like I should go there more often, it really is like reading the patch notes for low-class American life. I've been to out of touch with how the walmart shoppers of America are living.

those are more than 5 years old. I'm a cheap ass so a lifelong walmart shopper also I worked there for a bit while in college. New stuff to me is they have more pallets and employees out on the floor during the day. I think they have changed their schedule structure around like Target has. Grocery pickup is thriving and you probably saw but didn't note the employees collecting merchandise for pickup. Younger people have been using that service more I assume to avoid coming into the store as much. I believe they have fewer people in the front of the store than historically even taking self checkout into account.

I just checked and walmart.com doesn't tell you this but I use the walmart app and it will tell you where to locate an item. HD website tells you aisle and bay and has everything marked very clearly. It is nice. At Target you also only need to use the website and set your location. WMT is definitely behind when it comes to that although I still have more confidence in them than TGT over the next couple of years especially with both companies competing against amazon. Walmart stores are warehouses and they can shift the back wall and shrink the sales floor and they have great locations for delivery as well as rock solid logistics. Even though a bond is a loan of money for interest, in the case of corporate bonds, it is considered (in moral theology) as purchasing a temporary stake in the assets of the corporation, and in the case of default, the bondholders only claim is against their share of the assets of the corporation (whatever remains of the assets of the corporation) and they don't have any further recourse than that.

I don't agree with your statement in general that loans are okay as long as they don't bankrupt the borrower. If you look at how Christian thinkers understood usury for early times, it's clear that the prohibition against usury was not just based on the amount of interest demanded or the ability of the borrow to repay. Whether something is usurious comes down to the nature of the contract. If I give you something and ask for interest, there are two things to me that seem like they change the nature of the contract. If I lend you something and you stop paying me my interest (in a rental contract for instance), can I reclaim the specific property that I loaned to you, and then do I have any further claim against you or your other property?

Walmart is terrible. I don't necessarily mean that they are more evil than other companies, that they aren't doing good things or even that that their products are necessarily worst than other companies'. It's just a miserable place to shop at. What I mean most of all is that Walmart attracts the worst dreg of society as its customers. If someone considers themselves a Walmart shopper, there's a good chance that their the kind of person that will leave food wrappers on the shelves, take merchandise off the shelf and put leave it in a different aisle spill stuff on the floor and walk away, etc. Walmart shares some of the blame, mainly (I suspect) not allocating enough staff to checkout and keeping up the store, but I think that the customers bear the majority of the blame. I decided to buy some TLRD stock recently. I think buying calls on TLRD, even if you normally like buying calls (which I don't), is probably not a good idea. Buy shares and don't gamble on time. If you were thinking that the stock is bound to surge in the near-term because of share repurchases, think again. Using ODP as an example, they had $100 million authorized at the beginning of the fiscal year for buy backs. Nevertheless, despite the share price sinking lower and lower, as of the last quarter's report, they still had $89 million of that unused. Maybe they have deployed some of those funds since then, but the point is that just because a company has money authorized to do big buybacks (double-digit percentage of market cap) and the share price seems really, really low, there's no guarantee that the company will deploy the authorized funds immediately or even at all.

Some of us like our jobs. My job is low stress, accomodating of my outside schedule and is even pretty fun a lot of the time. Even if I get tired of my current job, I'd like to keep working at something and making an income as long as I'm reasonably able to do so. If I work hard and live within my means, I hope I can put my children on a good course, and they can worry about money less than I do. Of course, my grandchildren or great grandchildren might fritter their good fortune away and start the cycle over again, but I'll at least do my part.

The implication here in this context being that smart minds of the past who were religious were only feigning religion outwardly due to social pressures.
