I've been a capitalist since most of you are born, but I'm starting to change my opinion on the subject of the rich.

Under US law, we allow business to run free. But once a business becomes a monopoly, we step in because there is value in competition.

I'm starting to think that we need to fight the monopoly on wealth. That there should be an individual "wealth cap".

My plan, which i think shouldn't get any argument is this... a net worth cap of $20 billion per individual. After that you can give it away to family, donate it to charity, or burn it in your back yard; but no one is allowed to have a net worth greater than $20 billion

$20 billion dollars is way, way fucking more than anyone will ever need and can burn through in an entire lifetime. Thank you for at least being willing to debate it.

Here's some random thoughts on the subject...

1. Because, as you noticed, $20 billion is more than anyone would ever need to live, the end result is that any money above the needs, desires, dreams, and avarice of the individual would be saved. And because it is saved (invested actually), the concentration of wealth has a side effect of being concentrated more.

So, for example, $100 billion invested in a no-risk investment with a 2% return would increase the total wealth by $2 billion per year. And it would grow exponentially.

In the long run, this means that not only would wealth continue to consolidate, the consolidation would accelerate. With no upper cap on wealth, consolidation of wealth is a natural side effect of capitalism.

2. It frees the rich to do greater things. Removed from the competition to beat the other guy on the richest man in the world list, the billionaire class would begin to compete in other things; such as... who can improve the world the most.

Imagine, for example, that Gates, Buffet or Soros were forced to divest a certain portion of their wealth each year (to keep themselves at or below the cap), suddenly you'd have the richest men in the world (and in may cases, very smart and very driven), looking for other mountains to climb. Maybe one will want to end disease, another will want to come up with a new form of energy. Either way, the wealth would be much more valuable working in the world instead of sitting as a bunch of numbers in the bank.

(to be continued)

>> No.15743725

>>15743695

3. Because it's the same principle that runs nearly every other aspect of life. Like I mentioned in my original comment, we don't allow monopolies in this country. Why not? Because history has proven that monopolies limit consumer choices, eventually cost the consumers more, and concentrate too much power in the hands of too few.

So if we limit monopolies in industry, why would we not limit monopolies in wealth? I get that there is an instinct to think it is wrong to limit wealth at all, and I have that instinct too. But I think by making the limit so ridiculously high, you overcome the practical desire to have no limit. Not a limit of $1 million, or $10 million; but a limit of $10 BILLION. A number so large as to be theoretical to nearly everyone, but also so low as to have a practical positive effect on the economy.

Fine, I will dumb it down to /biz/ level by turning it into a crypto example...

... Imagine electricity was free. Imagine that crypto minors did not have to spend their mined coins on running their operation.

... Given a limited number of miners, and the fact that they get a fee on every transaction, what would happen in the long run?

The short answer is... all of the coins would concentrate into the hands of the miners, and which point there wouldn't be enough coins left for the system to run. The concentration of coin would reduce the public supply, which would reduce their availability and use. Eventually, the miners would have all of the coins, and the system would collapse.
