15717774 No.15717774 [Reply] [Original]

Just got this from Apmex.
Just curious. Apmex tests all of their gold that they sell, right? I bought this beautiful gold round from em, but I noticed a little ding in it and I saw a little darkness in the ding. You can see the little "ding" after the word GAL. It's a little dark smudge of something. It's not fake right? A magnet has no effect on it. I've ordered much on Apmex before so I doubt it but eghh.

Bring it to a pawn shop they will test it and give you a price.
Decline the price and walk away.
You got your coin tested for free.

when i said specific speed of sound is the only non invasive method that is 100% sure i meant it. tungsten and osmium for example both go for fraction of golds price in the right ratio gives you golds specific weight.

>>15720598
>Gold is a soft metal, and thus conventional wisdom says that the deeper the imprint your teeth make (without revealing a different metal beneath the gold), the purer it is. However, this test would not be foolproof: Gold coins can have a core of lead (for the weight) which is soft enough to leave bite marks in. In fact, historically, gold was typically alloyed with other, harder metals to make it harder, while still maintaining the standard gold weight. Thus, the bite test was actually a means of detecting a lead forgery (teeth marks) versus a real minted gold alloy coin (no marks). Also, gold is an excellent heat sink; most metals quickly heat up when they're held, but gold remains cold in one's hand for some time - and the lips, tongue and teeth are even better than fingertips at detecting changes in temperature. Alloyed or cored gold heats up faster, and biting it is an easy way to test this - though in more polite settings, merchants kept a bottle of acid by the cash register; gold is a noble metal which is resistant to change by corrosion, oxidation or acid, so a merchant could determine the purity of gold by putting a drop of acid on it AKA the "Acid Test."

Go to youtube and search for water weight testing gold coins. First you have to fill a clear cup with water and then put it on the scale and reset it to your new zero kg/lb with the cup of water on it.
Then you make a little rope around your coin and build 2 pillars standing around that cup of water on the scale.
Scrap the end of the rope to the middle stick which is hold by the 2 pillars and dig your coin in the water and notice the water rejection of the coin by looking at the new mass of the kg/lb display.
Sorry for my bad english anon but if you didnt understand me you'll better watch youtube videos doing the exact same example.

I did it for me and my coin turned out be real (no wonder i bought it from a well known german-jew chain jgold seller degussa)
