So is there anyone here who does music for money? I'm looking to establish a side gig, and I think as far as my skillset goes, it is one of my better opportunities. I am a sax player and am also looking to do some synth stuff with a wind controller and other stuff.

Any tips for getting started, what to look for, etc? Definitely not looking to get famous or something, but it would be nice to translate something I'm good at to a little extra cash.

I've played at least 2 shows a month for the last few years. You're going to have much better luck with synth(keyboard/piano) than you will with sax, but if you can find a paying sax gig its likely to pay pretty well. Not sure if youre in the US, but depending where you are you can make a lot of money doing it. I make around 150-200 a show, so it can be pretty significant income if you play with the right group at the right places. To get started craigslist is always a good place to check, but honestly find the open mics in your town and meet the other musicians there. Despite how it may seem they usually aren't just an amateur hour, thats where most musicians go to meet other people of their skill level and start new groups. If you live in the midwest in the US in a state that has a bar culture, theres a good chance it'll be easy to get going and getting paid, but if you live in a bigger city area or more metropolitan area in general you might have to pay them to play and get started. I know its that way down in chicago. If you have any more questions just ask
