There is absolutely no reason why Chainlink needs to be a currency. It's literally just an integration service like MuleSoft or Mirth.

I've been a developer for 7 years now, I do this shit all day with Mirth/Cloverleaf integrations. Client A wants to communicate with Client B. I write the interface the goes in between and knows how to take data from one endpoint, convert it into data that the other endpoint understands, and send it to the other endpoint.

I've been a developer for 17 years. Chainlink needs a currency to act as collateral for nodes. Wouldn't make sense to have ETH locked up as collateral, especially considering CL aims to be blockchain agnostic in the future.

Chainlink isn't a currency and has never claimed to be. The Chainlink token is a low friction way to denominate and move value within a closed network of computers aka nodes.
