I want to love Lord of the Rings but there is just one glaring plot hole.... Why didn't Frodo just hide the ring somewhere like throw it in the ocean. It would have been stuck in a cave for forever if those dumb manlets never took the ring in the first place. So why not just hide it again. Lotr fans btfo

Frodo would have been too drawn to the ring to keep it hidden. Same way Bilbo went mad for it.

It would be more sensible to ask on >>>/lit/
But AIUI losing the ring again, or even throwing it in the ocean, would not have been sufficient to stop Sauron from taking over the whole of Middle Earth.

This. to put it another way, the ring was like chainlink on the biz subreddit. Frodo was the autists that obsessed over it and had to destroy it so it couldn't corrupt their souls with money, so they made Nazi and frog memes and called the founder a fatass constantly until any company that would have adopted the tech would never touch it.

This, also after eons passed the ring would have eventually been found again, the great rings had this tendency. Also the elves power was slowly waning, so the strength to oppose Sauron was diminishing, waiting would have just ceded middle earth to him.

The real plot hole is why didn't they just get the Gwaihir to help

Sauron was already winning the war. Destroying the ring was the only way to win the war.

Based answer. But there is no hole there. Gandalf was leading them to the Gwaihir. His plan was to secret them to the Eagles, and once there fly Frodo to mount doom with the ring. When he was forced to battle the Balrog, his last words to the fellowship were "fly, you fools!" In hopes someone *cough* Aragorn *cough* would see his plan. He missed it. Gandalf had kept it so secret it led to that plan failing.

They tried hiding it. Didn't work. The Ring wants to be found, and as far as the fate of all living things goes, it doesn't matter how long the Ring is willing to wait to be found. It must be destroyed for the future to be secure.
It also has a way of making it extremely difficult for anyone who does possess it to actually destroy it. Most characters in the book don't even want to touch it.

It was written to Tolkein's son fighting in WWI to keep him and his fellow soldiers occupied in the trenches. Hitler was an infantry soldier. Sauron might be the Kaiser.

Tolkien was in WW1. He fought in the Somme. The Dead Marshes are the clearest reference to his time in the war.

This was addressed in the book. Sauron is immortal. He will not die of old age. Therefore if you throw it in the ocean then he will still be around when the ocean dries up and the geography changes hundreds of thousands of years later and he will easily reclaim it
