This

Gold and Silver is technically money

USD are currency

Money must have three properties
-Medium of exchange
-Unit of account
-Store of value

Considering that the USD's value is derived from faith in the US government, and the fact that a dollar today is worth less than a dollar a year from now, one can conclude that it is not money, but rather CURRENCY

Gold and silver have held their purchasing power since roman times. Thus, they can truly be considered Money.

if you buy 1k worth of gold in USD in 2020 then in 2040 that gold will be 1k USD? or will the value of that gold stay at $1k 2020 USD

>> No.1548018

>>1548002
no. precious metals are hedges against a SHTF scenario. they will always be worth SOMETHING and they last a long time, unlike lots of collectible items and shit.

you don't buy precious metals as an investment. that's totally pointless. i know a guy that bought thousands in silver in the 1990s and he actually made some money when he sold in the late 2000s, but that's it.

in the sixties gold used to be like 35 dollars an ounce

also in the sixties, a good suit would cost you 35 dollars

these days, gold costs over 1,000

these days, a good suit costs over 1,000

long story short: gold can hedge against inflation

not a great example since in the 60's the price of gold had been artificially kept at $35 for decades already.

just because someone has some cash sitting around doesn't necessarily mean they plan on keeping it for the next 20 years or something.

In fact cash is pretty useful for buying things. Quite a bit easier to spend than gold or stocks or pork bellies.

I keep a couple thousand US sitting around all the time. It's just my spending money, I don't care if it's earning anything.

It's not that is was artificially kept there, it's that it was the standard for our money. The value of our money was kept where the gold was.

Although i think his argument that gold will hedge you against inflation just because it always has i very strong.
