You can backtest on Quantopian and QuantConnect. I think Quantopian is all basically python and it uses the zipline trading library that they developed. Uses Jupyter notebooks for research. all good stock strategies require patience. personally, I'm not one for value trading anyway because of the research it requires. trading the level of the market as a whole is much more my style.

Options can be exercised even if they're out of the money and options can expire without being exercised even if they are in the money. It's up to the option holder. I've had it where calls didn't get exercised even though the underlying stock was in the money, presumably because it was on a clear downward trend (and in fact crashed hard the following Monday).
