Do you have a business idea? If not, don't open a business. If so, ask yourself why you'll succeed where others fail. Most small businesses fail in the first year of operation.

If you want to open a restaurant/coffee shop stop right there and go back to being a wagie. The margins in these businesses are notoriously AWFUL.

If you have a decent idea and it's not a restaurant/coffee shop, don't open just yet. Learn accounting and basic finance principles. Accounting is the language of business and finance is what you need to understand it properly. You need to understand cash flow, revenue recognition, taxes (HUGE ONE), profit, loss, and depreciation. Business is a full contact sport. If you don't understand these things, you're going to have your ass kicked out there and probably end up shutting down.

Once you understand this stuff, you'll want to do market research. Do as much as possible. You should know your ideal customer, where they're going to be coming from, where to position yourself so that you are convenient for your customers. You will want to come up with a marketing strategy as well.

All this is to say, if you don't know anything, don't open a business. Read about successful businessmen (i.e. Howard Schultz, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and above all Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger), learn accounting and finance, and DO YOUR HOMEWORK.
