They would receive payment before you can lower the reward. The difficulty adjustment works by seeing how long it took to find X number of blocks, by then it's too late and they already have their full-value reward. They don't care if it drops X number of blocks later, they will just leave and come back.

And in a future scenario if the coin became popular and had a lot of hashrate, everyone's profits would be shrinking faster than any other coin.
