Short or Long you are betting that the market will follow your choice from the entry point.

Example you enter BTC market short at 11,000 and its goes down to 9,000.

IF you close your position at 9000 you make money on the difference. If the price went to 13,000 you may be in danger of liquidation if you dont close your position at a loss.

If goes the other way and price is $110, you must buy at that price and sell for $99.

Shorts drop when they close their positions. They close their positions when either 1) the price moves up too high, too fast and they are forced closed, or 2) price moves down hugely, and they close position to take profit.

Look at the same chart and compare the big red days to the BTCUSD charts. You will always see what I outlined above. The moves in May between May 7 and 11 demonstrate.
