Unless you are a great trader, buy and hold. Most projects aren't going to x1000, but the most likely are shitcoins with very low price. If you really want to find the gems, then be prepared to do a lot of reading and research. Get to know the crypto space and what the coins do and plan to do. If you aren't willing to put in the effort, then just spread $50-100 around on random shitcoins and hope when you pull the level you get a jackpot.

I'm not a great trader. I can barely beat the market, so I buy and hold. I am very good at identifying coins. I got in ETH and LINK very early, but it's a lot of work to figure out which coins are the winners.
