You do not need LINK to run a node. LINK is used as collateral. Provide the wrong information you lose LINK. A node with more LINK will be seen as a more reliable source. The less skin you have in the game the less reliable you are seen. There has been much speculation on how staking tokens in a node will work. When the token fluctuates in price daily it will be harder to justify how much the data is worth. I expect another blog post addressing this when more nodes come online/ staking is almost available.
