when you buy, you have to document that transaction and the price you bought it for. if you bought it using another cryptocurrency, the cost is the fair market value of that cryptocurrency.
when you sell it, you have to realize capital gains or losses depending on how much value came out of the transaction. same rules as above.
those capital gains/losses must be reported and are taxed as income.
this applies especially to the US and Canada.
