cold storage can be any wallet that's not connected to the internet. a paper wallet, hardware wallet for example. You can also use a dedicated linux boot stick with MEW as long as you don't use that system for anything else and encrypt the HDD. Also always have several backups of everything at different places.

Best places to buy FTM would probably be Kucoin or IDEX.
