Broke nigger here. Family is completely poor and know nothing about finance, so it's the same for me.
I was thinking about getting into a trade but I'm not sure what the better option is.
Some of the few I have to choose from currently:

>Become HVAC through trade school while having literally no money and hoping I get a grant

>Become Apartment Maintenance Technician, get a free apartment while working after (or maybe during) training

>Join the Air Force and get training for HVAC there and benefits along with that

Which one of these options is the better one? They all have their pros but I'm not sure what would be better in the long run. A free apartment would leave me in a very good spot in terms of saving money, but the Air Force benefits outweigh that. Thing is there are probably more cons for the Air Force that balance it out once again.

Any ideas, lads?

Really? Let me check it out and see.
Only reason the Air Force and Trade Schools that give me a free apartment as compensation is because I have nothing to start from really. If HR is as accessible as those two then I wouldn't mind.
>>13854127
I hear that the Air Force's training is top tier which is why I considered it. Free training on top of the benefits I get from joining itself. Hard to pass up.
Do you recommend Industrial Maintenance? I was also thinking about being an Aviary Mechanic but it's hard to make a decision if all I have for reference is what I imagine the job to be.

If your family is very poor and knows zero about money, your first step is to stop living with them because the moment you start climbing out of your hole, they will just drag you back down.
I'm not saying fuck them and leave forever, but you need to be in a position of relative comfort before you can do anything for them, so until that time comes you have to strike out on your own and keep them at a healthy distance.
To that end, you need a place to stay. Obviously getting a loan or using savings to acquire skills that you can immediately use to make good money is ideal, but if you can't support yourself through school, taking on a job that provides you with a place to stay while you build your human capital (i.e., invest in yourself) is a good deal.
Would not recommend the military for anyone inclined to post here. If you are a true anon at heart the military will in all likelihood be hell on earth for you.

>taking on a job that provides you with a place to stay while you build your human capital (i.e., invest in yourself) is a good deal.
Yeah the apartment maintenance provides me with an apartment of my choosing. I get paid while training and as I go through it I get a raise in pay for each section of what I need to learn. The max is 18 dollars but there are a few problems that I'd have to deal with since they'll probably just higher someone with a lower rate instead. It makes my housing situation kind of unstable, but I'm sure during that time I could have enough money to fare on my own.

The cons that come with that option are why I'm worried about a decision that I stick to. It's what makes the Air Force more appealing. On top of quality training (Which I'm not sure is there in the Apartment Maintenance option) and free college rides, you get paid monthly with several other benefits. I could do either after another if I ever change my mind.
>Would not recommend the military for anyone inclined to post here. If you are a true anon at heart the military will in all likelihood be hell on earth for you.
I hear that the Air Force is entirely different. But I have no idea and was hoping maybe that someone who knows about finance also decided to join the Air Force.
You might be right for both cases though, but I guess it's better to be safe and miserable than sorry.

You're right though, I think I might go with Apartment Maintenance since I can join the Air Force at any time.

I have worked with several people who were prior military and were in aircraft maintenance. Industrial maintenance is pretty chill. You just sit around and wait for something to break and then get it going again.

Someone mentioned this on the /diy/ threads and I never considered it because I didn't think I would ever be in a situation that allowed me to. Went for HVAC/Electric/Plumbing because they were in high demand so you converted me already.
I'll make it a goal to apply to the Air Force very soon.

I went to school for electronics and automated manufacturing. Knowledge of PLC is a big plus is an automation setting. I'm not a big mechanical person, more technical, but sometimes the job requires you to get dirty. Get training anywhere and as cheap as you can, especially if you can get paid to do it or get it free. The first job is the hardest one to get. Any company seeks prior military.

Army helicopter mechanics 15T get hvac certified as part of training, and they also have marketable airframe experience. Here’s my recommendation , assuming you’re under 25

Join army national guard as 15t
You get back from training in 9 months with 10k cash in your pocket, free hvac cert
You can now get free college in your state, double check this before enlistment. Go use this free college and get a stem degree, recruiters will fight over a black guy with CS degree. Or just compete with the illegal immigrants in the hvac sector, it’s up to you

I did this and they gave me over 80k the last 5 years just for school and my job is easy as shit, not to mention 300 bucks a month for 2 days of work

I'm just kidding. If you're under 24 why no go to job corps? Free education, food and living space. Once you have a trade, go to uni in your spare time and join the airforce as an officer once you have a degree.

>> No.13855423

Military isn't a bad route to get a tech trade.

Consider going navy, you can get training to be a nuclear specialist on subs or aircraft carriers. Monitoring a reactor for 4 years while you cruise the planet.

Can immediately get a job at a nuclear plant after you get out, or get into any uni you want with the cheap government grants if you want to get a degree for it.

I wouldn't really consider it a matter of "safety." Investment should become part of your lifestyle as soon as you have a job. Even if you aren't making enough to set aside, say, the full $6,000 max IRA contribution for the year, you should at least budget to save something from each paycheck and put it in good investments. The Bogleheads guide outlines one such approach that requires really minimal knowledge or thought on your part. It may not seem like much now, but you'll thank yourself later.
